A suspenseful action film, which critics described as an ‘unimportant’ entry in a major movie series, is currently climbing the Amazon Prime rankings.
Since making its debut on screens in 2014,John Wick has been succeeded by three additional sequels.– Chapter 2 in 2017, Chapter 3- Parabellum in 2019, and Chapter 4 in 2023.
These movies have all been highly praised by critics, while also earning a significant $1 billion (£742 million) globally.
For those who are not familiar, the series featuresKeanu Reevesas the main character, a former assassin who reverts to his past life after a group of Russian gangsters take his car and kill his dog, which was given to him by his late wife Helen.
Critics described it as ‘exciting’ and a ‘rewarding comeback to action’ for the Hollywood actor – who had previously beenmost recognized for appearing in the Matrix series.
Although John Wick has a dedicated fan base, a spin-off that came out last year did not achieve the same level of success.
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina takes place between the third and fourth movies.and featured Ana de Armas as a ballerina and assassin Eve Macarro, who confronts a group of assassins as she seeks revenge for her father’s death.
The ensemble also featured Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Lance Reddick, Norman Reedus, and Reeves.
With a production cost of $90 million (£66 million), the movie earned $137.2 million (£101 million).
Nevertheless, critics and fans remained unimpressed with the newest addition to the series.
“The movie provides all the top-notch, polished fight scenes that fans anticipate from the series — but it fails to ensure viewers develop an interest in its deadly main character, resulting in a focus only on the impressive choreography,” Digital Journal stated in its review.
‘This film is essentially two hours of Eve committing murders. The storyline has many inconsistencies, and the only strong dialogue in the script occurs when John Wick returns,’ The Australian noted.
“That the film ‘From the World of John Wick: Ballerina’ is silly is understandable. That it is this lackluster is unacceptable,” The Reader added.
In the meantime, audience members described it as ‘poorly written’, ‘somewhat of a stereotype’, and even ‘unwatchable’.
However, since their release onAmazon Prime Videoover the weekend, the movie has climbed to the top of the charts and is currently among the most-viewed films on streaming platforms in the UK.
When interviewed by Live Streaming Movie Film Online at the time of the release of the female-led film,the director Len Wiseman talked about why it wasn’t intentionally feminist.
‘It’s a film filled with intense action and features a very compelling and robust main character, and I wouldn’t emphasize that much…’ he mentioned.
“I’ve been portraying female-led characters in action films right from the start of my career,” he says, referring to his action horror series Underworld, which featured his ex-wife.Kate Beckinsale. “I don’t really place much importance on it; I believe women are strong no matter what.”
So, I’ll say it’s not done on purpose, but to me, it’s an action film featuring a very strong female lead.
He then highlighted that lines like “fight like a girl”– a phrase that appeared throughout the film and even served as the title of the song during the credits – were not meant to cater to the idea of a movie trying to make a statement.
“To give [fight like a girl] a new twist and turn it into something truly strong, instead of just a taunt or anything like that, that was definitely on purpose. But I didn’t want it to come across as trying too hard to appeal to that idea. Just be genuine about it,” he added.
While some might not have been impressed by the Ballerina spin-off, fans of John Wick can expect Keanu to return to the lead role in the future.
Back in 2020, Jon Feltheimer, the CEO of Lionsgate, stated that a fifth movie was also in the works.
The most recent update occurred in April 2025, when the film was formally revealed at CinemaCon, with Reeves set to once again take on the title character, and director Chad Stahelski also expected to return.
The filmmaker has already clarified that the storyline will not include the High Table, and will instead have Wick dealing with fresh dangers, following his resolution with the prior group.
