2026 has only just started, but it’s already difficult to ignore Christopher Nolan’sThe Odysseyas a “movie of the year” favorite. AnyChristopher Nolan movieis a film event, but taking into accountOppenheimerhis tremendous success, the grand magnitude ofThe OdysseyThe source material, along with the cast members, would make it a major surprise if, by December, Nolan’s 2026 project wasn’t ranked among the top three films of the year.

The Odysseywill definitely be hard to surpass, but a fewupcoming films in 2026possess the elements required to ruin Homer’s celebration. All three are likely to appear on most critics’ year-end top 10 lists, but the real difficulty in terms of major film competition will be outdoing the accomplishments of Christopher Nolan and his team.

Disclosure Day (June 12)

Releasing only weeks after The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan versus Steven Spielberg offers an intriguing contrast between eras. More than just the “next Spielberg film,”Disclosure Daysignals the legend’s return to science fiction with a horror twistand extraterrestrial life forms – the arena Spielberg once ruled withClose Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

The group may not include quite as many celebrities asThe Odyssey‘, but with Emily Blunt – steadily rising to the rank of sci-fi icon – in the starring role,Disclosure Day feels special.

The enigma of the storyline and the extraterrestrial danger at its core heightens the already-exceptional level of suspense surrounding Spielberg’s upcoming invasion.Disclosure Day‘s wonderfully eerie trailer, on the other hand, incorporates the elements of traditional alien abduction films from past decades (crop circles, secretive governmental organizations, etc.) and presents them in a uniquely contemporary film that avoids any hint of ’80s sentimentality. It may not be as visually grand asThe Odysseyat first glance, but between the two films,Disclosure Daystill has additional cards to play.

Dune: Part 3 (December 18)

While The Odyssey and Disclosure Daysignal a possible revival for original films (since, no, we’re not regarding Homer’s canon as a 3000-year-old shared universe),the follow-up to watch for in 2026 is certainlyDune: Part 3.

Don’t mistake it, this third installment is a gamble. While 2021’sDuneand its 2024 sequel were both impressive, functioning as two parts of one film that adapts Frank Herbert’s groundbreaking novel.Dune: Part 3is the exception, according to Herbert’s second book in the series,Dune Messiah.

But when you think about the exceptional quality of Denis Villeneuve’s first twoDunefilms, the second of which was arguably even better than the first, along with the solid reputation ofDune Messiah as a sequel novel, It’s hard to predict what Hollywood will do next.Duneinstallment as anything but a blueprint for continued success.

Villeneuve and Nolanhave been engaged in a long-standing contest for the title of “greatest sci-fi director of the 21st century.” WithThe Odysseybelonging to a completely different genre, that discussion won’t be settled by 2026. Nevertheless, Villeneuve presenting a full trilogy of legendary worksDunefilms would significantly solidify his position as the leading science fiction innovator, putting the responsibility on Nolan’s shoulders.

Werwulf (December 25)

After The Witch, The Northman, and Nosferatu, Robert Eggerscontinues his “director least likely to direct”Barbie 2” campaign with Werwulfin 2026. Located in 13th century England and featuring a script composed in Middle English,Werwulfwill not be a new experience for Eggers fans, and considering how well the said territory has performed over the past 11 years, that’s certainly not a bad thing.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson appears with other Eggers favorites Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe in a new story centered on the nameless creature. While details remain limited for now,Nosferatuproven to be Eggers’ most fully realized and successful film to date. Viewers have observed the director’s distinctive style and dark aesthetic develop throughout four outstanding horror films, and as the next phase in that progression,Werwulfhas the ability to surpass them all – even if it’s not the most traditional way to observe Christmas Day.

A dark horse facing the powerful trio ofThe Odyssey, Disclosure Day, and Dune: Part 3, Werwulfstill places Robert Eggers in the company of Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, and Denis Villeneuve as someone who could create the best film of 2026.
