Critics highlighted McAvoy for his portrayal of the different characters.Haleigh Foutchreviewed SplitFor Live Streaming Movie Film Onlineand highlighted McAvoy’s ability to give the characters depth. “Thanks to McAvoy’s talent, we are able to understand and relate to each character shown to us (even the three involved in the film’s dark opening act), and Shyamalan takes advantage of this to create a mix of entertaining and emotionally powerful moments,” she wrote in her review. On that twist, Foutch stated:

Regarding the last moments, it’s not a twist in Shyamalan’s typical style, but as I mentioned before, you’d be wise to steer clear. It’s a very entertaining post-credits scene that caused most viewers to exclaim “WHAT?” on the screen. I have to confess I couldn’t stop grinning for roughly twenty minutes after the movie ended. Since it’s Shyamalan, many of us spend the entire time anticipating the twist, but this one is so unexpected and so different that there’s absolutely no way you’ll predict it.
