A Legacy of Competition and Friendship

Ninety-one-year-old David "Dave" Hostetler Sr. has been a fixture in the Senior Games since 2009, and he shows no signs of slowing down. His passion for competition and community has made him a standout figure in the event, which is more than just a series of athletic challenges—it’s a way to stay active and build lasting friendships.

Why the Senior Games Matter

The Senior Games are an annual nationwide event that encourages people aged 50 and older to remain physically and socially engaged. In the post-pandemic era, where making new connections can be challenging, these games offer a unique opportunity to meet others with similar interests and maintain an active lifestyle. The event promotes health, wellness, and a sense of belonging, all while celebrating the spirit of competition.

How the Games Work

This year, the games will run from March to May, with the Charlotte area hosting the 2026 Mecklenburg County Senior Games and SilverArts. The competition features over 50 individual and team sports, as well as various arts events. Athletes can participate in traditional sports like track and field, swimming, bocce, and pickleball, or explore creative activities such as performing arts, heritage arts (like basketweaving and knitting), literary arts, and visual arts.

A Personal Journey

Hostetler, who was born in Charlotte and now resides in Mount Holly, first learned about the games years ago at a dance in Gastonia. Since then, he has consistently qualified for the national competitions and even earned a gold medal in billiards. Over the years, he has participated in a wide range of events, including corn hole, pickleball, bocce, and track and field, which includes races like the 50-meter dash, high jump, discus, hammer, and 25lb superweight.

What makes his journey even more remarkable is that he has competed alongside his daughter, Kami McGuire, who is 55 years old, and his son, David Hostetler Jr., who is 58. Their shared love for the games has created a family tradition that continues to thrive.

What Participants Say

Hostetler often shares his philosophy with others: "You have to stay off the couch, and you have to go and practice games and do some exercise and eat your vegetables." He emphasizes the importance of staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. For him, the games are not just about competition—they’re about friendship. "You make so many friends," he says. "Friends keep you coming back."

Registration Details

For those interested in joining the games, registration is available online and by paper. Mecklenburg County residents can register for $20 online and $25 by paper, while non-county residents pay $23 online and $28 by paper through January 23. Standard registration runs through February 20, with fees increasing slightly for both county and non-residents. Scholarships are also available for those who need financial assistance. Interested individuals can contact 980-314-1328, visit the Senior Games and SilverArts website, or email SeniorGames@MeckNC.gov for more information.

The Big Picture

If participants qualify at the local games this spring, they will have the opportunity to compete in the North Carolina Senior Games and SilverArts State Finals in the fall of 2026. Top performers may even advance to the national games, which are scheduled for 2027. This progression highlights the competitive nature of the event and the potential for personal growth and achievement.

Get Involved

Volunteer opportunities are also available for those who want to contribute to the success of the Senior Games and SilverArts. Whether as a participant, volunteer, or supporter, there are countless ways to get involved and make a difference in the lives of others.
