Home Invasion in Melbourne’s North-West Leaves Man Seriously Injured
A man who was shot, stabbed, and hit with a hammer during a violent home invasion in Melbourne’s north-west has been identified as an unintended victim of the attack. According to police, the assault was targeted at someone else, but the 60-year-old man became the unfortunate casualty.
The incident occurred just before 1:30 am on Trentham Drive in Gladstone Park, where five hooded and masked individuals broke into a house. The group reportedly entered while a couple was asleep inside. The 60-year-old man, who was sleeping in the house, was the first to wake up and confronted the intruders near the kitchen area.
Armed with a hammer, knives, and a gun, the offenders allegedly placed the firearm in the man’s mouth and demanded cash. They also repeatedly asked for another male, believed to be the boyfriend of the couple’s daughter. However, this individual does not reside at the Gladstone Park property and was not present at the time of the attack.
When the man failed to meet their demands, he was subjected to a brutal attack. He was shot, stabbed multiple times, and struck with a hammer. The ordeal lasted between five to 10 minutes before the group left him on the floor and moved into a bedroom where his 57-year-old wife was sleeping.
In that room, the offenders threatened the woman with a gun before fleeing the scene in a white vehicle. Fortunately, she was not physically injured. The 60-year-old man was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and multiple strikes to his upper body, lower body, and head region.
A family friend revealed that the man had recently undergone open-heart surgery and was still recovering. This adds to the concern surrounding the attack, as his health condition may have made him more vulnerable.
Police have confirmed that both victims were not the intended targets of the ambush. Instead, the attackers were seeking the boyfriend of the couple’s daughter. Detective Inspector Adam Tilley from the Armed Crime Squad emphasized the severity of the situation.
“Being woken by five offenders, especially those armed with firearms, knives, and a hammer, is extremely concerning,” Tilley said. “That’s why we are asking the public for assistance.”
He urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward by contacting local police or Crime Stoppers. Additionally, safety messages have been sent to the man who was named by the offenders during the attack. While this individual is known to police, they have not been in contact since the incident.
“We are making efforts to locate him and ensure his safety,” Tilley added. “We would like to speak to him in person to express our concerns.”
Despite the extensive investigation, the offenders remain at large. Authorities continue to seek any leads that could help identify and apprehend those responsible for the violent home invasion. The case highlights the ongoing need for community vigilance and cooperation in ensuring public safety.
