President Donald Trump talked with journalists from The Atlantic, however, according to Ashley Parker and Michael Scherer, these interactions turned into two unintended discussions.

On Monday, Parker revealed during an appearance on MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ that there were essentially two discussions involving the president. One of these interactions occurred at around 1:28 a.m., which seems like an unintentional call. Regarding Defense Secretary Hegseth, they found it noteworthy because he had replaced his chief of staff and dismissed three key advisors. Additionally, there have been media reports about Hegseth bringing his spouse—who isn’t part of the Department—to official gatherings. Apparently, there was also mention of setting up a makeup studio within the Pentagon. When asked for comment, the president stated that he’d spoken positively with Hegseth and believed things would improve under his leadership,
Scherer passed along the recording to MSNBC, where Trump seemingly ended up addressing the journalist he had formerly criticized on his Truth Social network.

If you believe Hegseth is over because of your view on Trump, you’re missing a crucial point.
"Who’s on the line?" Trump inquires as noises of someone fiddling with a phone can be heard.
"This is Michael Scherer speaking. He works as a journalist for The Atlantic," he states.
“Oh, I understand who you are, Michael,” Trump responded. “I am well aware of your stance. You never produce anything positive about me, Michael. Not now, not ever.”
"But he kept talking to you," Witt observed after replaying the recording.
"We had been working on this story for over a month, conducting interviews within both his close-knit group and broader circles,” explained Scherer. “We had officially and unofficially requested an interview with him multiple times; he initially consented but later changed his stance. Earlier that same week, following some pressure from an unknown source warning him against speaking to us, he posted something on Truth Social suggesting our conversation wasn’t going to happen. This essentially eliminated all options available to us. Typically, I wouldn’t reach out directly to key figures without prior contact. However, since he publicly labeled me as someone spreading falsehoods and also attacked Ashley Parker, there wasn’t much left to risk at that stage.”
He mentioned that he had interviewed Trump "quite often," so when Trump responded with, "I know who you are; it wasn’t just that one week,"
What I’m trying to say is, by that time, I’d conducted six previous interviews with him. So he certainly knew who I was. Initially, it felt somewhat uncomfortable; I doubted whether it was actually him when he answered the call. However, our conversation lasted over 20 minutes and turned out to be quite fruitful, forming the core of my article. Later though, additional phone conversations didn’t go as well. Finally, just last week, he extended an invitation for us to visit the Oval Office, which helped complete the narrative.
