The Role of a Mother’s Self-Esteem in Shaping Children’s Educational Attitudes
A mother’s self-esteem significantly influences how children perceive and approach education, according to Associate Professor Dr Aziah Ismail, a lecturer at the Centre for Educational Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Her insights were shared during a presentation on a study titled “The Influence of Maternal Leadership on Children’s Learning Motivation in Perak: Maternal Self-Esteem as a Mediator.” The event also included participation from Datuk Salbiah Mohamed, chairman of the State Women, Family, Social Welfare, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Committee.
Dr Aziah emphasized that mothers with high self-esteem not only believe in their own abilities but also play a crucial role in shaping their children’s psychological development. This influence extends to fostering interests and encouraging success in life. She explained that when children witness their mothers displaying confidence and a sense of self-worth, they are more likely to adopt similar traits. They learn that achieving success starts with believing in oneself and working consistently towards goals.
Mothers who maintain healthy self-esteem are better equipped to recognize and support their children’s passions without second-guessing themselves or comparing their children to others. They guide their children in setting realistic and meaningful life goals. Additionally, these mothers provide emotional and mental support that directly impacts their children’s motivation to succeed. When mothers believe in themselves, it becomes easier for them to instil confidence in their children.
Dr Aziah pointed out that parental motivation towards education is a vital component of family development. It encompasses both internal and external encouragement that inspires children to view schooling positively. Education is seen as a pathway for personal growth and future success. Children who are highly motivated academically perceive school as an engaging and beneficial environment. They attend classes with eagerness to learn and improve their skills. For them, school is not just about gaining knowledge but also about social interaction and personal development. They understand that education helps build essential skills, values, and opportunities for the future.
The Impact of Maternal Leadership on Family Dynamics
In addition to Dr Aziah’s findings, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed highlighted the efforts of the Perak government in conducting various studies aimed at equipping mothers with the necessary knowledge and guidance to strengthen their leadership within the family. The state is working strategically with relevant stakeholders to ensure that research-based information is disseminated effectively for family development.
Salbiah emphasized that these studies help ensure decisions are made based on data rather than assumptions. By relying on factual information, the government can design programs that address the underlying issues affecting families. This approach ensures that initiatives are impactful and tailored to meet the specific needs of communities.
The study presented during the event underscores the importance of maternal self-esteem as a mediator between leadership and learning motivation. It highlights how a mother’s belief in herself can create a positive ripple effect on her children’s educational journey. Through this understanding, families can foster environments where children feel supported, motivated, and empowered to achieve their full potential.
By promoting a culture of self-belief and continuous learning, mothers can play a pivotal role in shaping not only their children’s academic success but also their overall well-being. This holistic approach to education and family development is essential for building a stronger, more resilient community.
