Strengthening Educational Ties Between Singapore and Thailand

Singapore is showing a strong interest in deepening its educational cooperation with Thailand, as the two nations commemorate six decades of close collaboration. This partnership has been built on a foundation of mutual respect, shared values, and a commitment to fostering future generations through education.

At the opening of the Singapore Education Fair 2025 in Bangkok, Quek Shei Ting, Deputy Chief of Mission of the Republic of Singapore to Thailand, emphasized the crucial role of education in maintaining and enhancing bilateral relations. She stated that over the past 60 years, Thailand and Singapore have maintained a long-standing history of friendship and cooperation, with education being one of the most significant areas of collaboration.

A Legacy of Collaboration

The two countries have engaged in numerous initiatives aimed at strengthening their educational ties. These include school twinning programs, the Singapore-Thailand Enhanced Partnership (STEP) Camp, and various cultural exchange activities. These efforts have not only promoted academic excellence but also fostered a deeper understanding between the people of both nations.

Beyond government-led projects, more than 70 Singaporean schools have formed partnerships with Thai institutions. This reflects the growing importance of personal connections and grassroots collaborations in shaping the relationship between the two countries.

“These examples demonstrate the strength of our educational ties,” said Ms. Quek. “They also provide valuable opportunities for young people in both Thailand and Singapore to expand their perspectives and gain new experiences.”

Expanding Higher Education Cooperation

In addition to these initiatives, Singapore is encouraging greater collaboration between higher education institutions in both countries. Many Singaporean universities and institutes have signed agreements with their Thai counterparts, covering joint research projects, student exchanges, and academic staff mobility.

Moreover, Singaporean students are increasingly seeking work experience in Thailand. Each year, approximately 200 interns from Singapore spend six months working in various Thai organizations. Ms. Quek highlighted that Singapore is eager to expand this initiative, as the country offers a safe and supportive environment for training and learning.

The Role of Scholarships

Scholarship programs have played a vital role in strengthening the educational relationship between Singapore and Thailand. Since 1998, the Singapore Ministry of Education has offered the ASEAN Scholarship to students from Thailand and other member states. Over the years, many outstanding Thai students have benefited from this program, while others have chosen to study in Singapore independently.

Many of these students have returned to Thailand to build successful careers and contribute to their communities. Ms. Quek expressed pride in the fact that these alumni remain lifelong friends of Singapore, continuing to strengthen the bonds between the two nations.

Encouraging More Thai Students to Study in Singapore

Ms. Quek encouraged more Thai students to consider studying in Singapore, highlighting the country’s world-class academic standards, cultural diversity, and safe environment. She noted that beyond academics, Singapore provides access to international networks and industries, thanks to its position as a regional business hub.

Students who study in Singapore can expect a wide range of career opportunities after graduation. The city-state’s dynamic economy and global connections make it an attractive destination for those seeking to build a successful future.

Conclusion

As Singapore and Thailand continue to celebrate their long-standing partnership, the focus on education remains a key pillar of their relationship. Through collaborative initiatives, scholarship programs, and increasing student exchanges, both nations are working together to ensure that future generations benefit from a strong and enduring connection. This commitment to education will not only shape individual lives but also strengthen the broader ties between the two countries.
