The image, captioned “A photo of maggots posted on the Kids Note of a daycare center in Pyeongtaek’s Songtan,” showed insect larvae floating on top of scorched rice. The post quickly gained traction across online communities and local parent groups, causing widespread concern.
The original poster expressed their shock, writing, “If this is what’s shown on Kids Note, did the children not eat it?” They added, “Everyone should be cautious. They are playing games with what the children eat.” This message resonated with many parents, who voiced their unease over the situation.
Parents in the Songtan area have been particularly affected by the incident. One parent shared, “I live in Songtan and send my child to a daycare center, so I feel uneasy.” Another parent, who plans to send their child to a Songtan daycare center next year, expressed fear, saying, “I’m worried now.”
A netizen claiming to be a source from a pest control company analyzed the insects in the photo and identified them as larvae of the Indian meal moth, also known as the rice moth. They clarified, “What is commonly called maggots are fly larvae, but these insects are moth larvae.” According to the analysis, the infestation likely occurred due to poor rice management in the kitchen or contamination of the scorched rice during delivery.
The netizen explained that the larvae use silk threads to create cocoons, which are sticky and can cause multiple larvae to clump together. They suggested, “It seems multiple larvae got tangled in the silk and entered together.” As a parent themselves, they expressed frustration, stating, “This photo is very infuriating,” and emphasized the need for a hygiene management report.
Some members of the public have questioned whether the photo was intentionally taken to highlight the presence of larvae. Speculation arose that a teacher might have captured the image deliberately, possibly as a way to draw attention to internal issues that couldn’t be reported directly.
