RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — On December 30, Governor Glenn Youngkin revealed $6.2 million in funding through the Growth and Opportunity for Virginia (GO Virginia) program.

As per the governor’s office, the grants will support 10 initiatives aimed at enhancing Virginia’s economic competitiveness by promoting innovation, improving workforce training, and encouraging growth in key industries. The financial support is anticipated to attract an extra $4 million in non-state investments across different sectors.

GO Virginia remains a driving force behind innovation and opportunity throughout the state,” Youngkin stated. “Virginia is more robust than ever, but we must continue to move forward. With an investment of $6.2 million in these initiatives, we are enhancing Virginia’s workforce, promoting vital strategic industries, and ensuring Virginia stays competitive for the future.

Recent efforts involve a range of programs including aviation maintenance education, growth in industrial trades, and career routes in new technology fields, along with regional innovation networks and ongoing strategic planning to prepare areas for significant industry advancements.

Numerous initiatives focus on collaborations with school districts, local community colleges, and academic institutions to enhance the alignment of educational programs with job market demands and offer opportunities for higher-paying career routes.

Throughout the commonwealth, we observe agreement in backing better talent pipelines, commercialization efforts, and the creation of competitive locations,” said Emily O’Quinn, chair of the GO Virginia State Board. “This sort of regional cooperation is essential for generating new jobs and greater economic prospects.

Among the biggest funding awards, $1.23 million will help Virginia Commonwealth University’s Small Business Opportunity Center extend its services to various regions by collaborating with universities and business support groups in areas such as Hampton Roads.

Additional smaller planning and feasibility grants were also given to assist with long-term economic plans, workforce development, and site preparation across various regions, such as Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, the Northern Neck, and the Blue Ridge corridor.
