The Secret Role of Robert Pattinson in Marty Supreme

Josh Safdie, the director behind A24’s latest film Marty Supreme, recently shared an intriguing detail about the movie that most fans may have missed. During a talk at London’s BFI Southbank on January 13, Safdie revealed that Robert Pattinson had a hidden role in the film that went unnoticed by most viewers. This was not the first time the two worked together; they previously collaborated on the 2017 crime thriller Good Time.

Safdie described Pattinson’s involvement as “a little Easter egg.” He mentioned that the voice of the commentator and umpire in the film is actually Pattinson. “No one knows this, but that voice — the commentator, the umpire — is Pattinson,” he said. “It’s like a little Easter egg. Nobody knows about that. […] He came and watched some stuff, and I was like, I don’t know any British people. So he’s the umpire.”

Fans who watch the film closely can hear Pattinson’s performance early on, when Timothée Chalamet’s character faces off against Géza Röhrig’s Bela Kletzki. Even without knowing about Pattinson’s cameo, Marty Supreme quickly became one of the most anticipated films of 2025.

A Star Is Born

Chalamet stars as a young man determined to achieve greatness, with a supporting cast that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Fran Drescher, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, and Abel Ferrara. Safdie shared how his first meeting with Chalamet inspired him to create the film.

“He was like Timmy Supreme, and it was intense,” Safdie said. “An agent came up to me and said, ‘I want to introduce you to the next superstar,’ which is already a red flag. And he’s got these wide eyes, and he’s like in the corner of the room, there but not where he wants to be, and he just had this supreme vision of himself.”

After watching Chalamet’s performance in Call Me By Your Name, Safdie decided to write Marty Supreme with the actor in mind. “He’s a movie star,” Safdie added. “This intense dreamer. Relentless, driven, this New Yorker, you know?”

The Challenges of Filmmaking

For many directors, a successful project like Marty Supreme might lead to a flurry of new projects. However, Safdie admits that the process is more complex for him. “After each film, I’ve got no more gas left in the car,” he said. “So I’ve got to like, go find a gas station, you know?”

This means fans may have to wait a while for his next film. Despite this, Safdie remains focused on creating meaningful work rather than rushing into another project.

A New Collaboration on the Horizon

Pattinson’s role in Marty Supreme may not have involved much screen time, but he is set to play a more prominent part alongside Chalamet in one of 2026’s most anticipated films: Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three. While details about Pattinson’s character remain a mystery, fans are already speculating about which role he might take on.

The film is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18. Pattinson has spoken about the challenges of filming Dune, describing it as an exhausting experience in the Arabian desert. “It was so relaxing, like my brain actually wasn’t operating. I did not have a single functioning brain cell. And I was just listening to Denis: ‘Whatever you want!’” he said.
