AARP Survey Reveals Hollywood’s Influence on Perceptions of Aging

AARP recently released its latest survey, "Rewriting the Script: The Power of Age Diversity on Screen," highlighting the significant role Hollywood plays in shaping how Americans view aging. The survey, which polled 2,013 U.S. adults aged 18 and over, found that 81% of respondents feel movies and TV shows influence their perception of aging. More than half believe stories featuring characters over 50 are more relatable across generations.

Other key findings from the survey include:

  • 93% of respondents said they are likely to watch something with characters over 50 in the leading role.
  • 33% claimed that a movie or TV show has helped them feel more positive about aging.
  • 57% say that romantic storylines underrepresent the full age spectrum.
  • Only 16% of adults in the 65-plus age group feel accurately reflected in these narratives.

Additionally, 79% of respondents want more authentic stories and characters reflecting their experiences as older adults, and 73% of respondents over 50 say they are more likely to support movies or TV shows with characters similar to them in age.

AARP released the results ahead of the Movies for Grownups awards, which will take place on Jan. 10 in Beverly Hills. Adam Sandler will be honored with a career achievement award, and the ceremony will be televised by "Great Performances" on Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. ET on PBS.
