Paul Mescal, the acclaimed actor known for his role in A24’s Aftersun, has a family that has been instrumental in shaping his journey. His parents, Paul Sr. and Dearbhla Mescal, have played a significant role in his life, offering support and encouragement throughout his career. The couple has three children: sons Paul and Donnacha, and daughter Nell.

A Strong Family Bond

Dearbhla and Paul Sr. are immensely proud of their son’s achievements. They have often accompanied him to high-profile events, including the November 2024 premiere of Gladiator II in Dublin. When asked about the experience, Dearbhla described it as "awe-inspiring" and emotional. She shared that hearing Paul’s name being shouted and the music from The Gladiator behind it was a moment she will never forget. "It was like a wedding, but with loads of cameras," she said.

The couple, married for over 30 years, raised their children in Maynooth, a town just 20 miles outside of Dublin. Their strong family bond has been a constant source of strength for all of them.

A Love Story on Stage

Paul Mescal’s passion for acting can be traced back to his parents’ meet-cute story. While starring in a theater production of Pirates of Penzance, Paul Sr. played the role of the "pirate king," while Dearbhla was one of the maids. According to Paul, this experience sparked his love for the stage.

He explained, "Thank God for that production, because I wouldn’t be here." This theatrical beginning has influenced his career, and he believes that somewhere in his blood, or heart, or head, the act of being onstage feels like an important place.

A Lasting Marriage

Paul Sr. and Dearbhla married in 1994, two years before welcoming their first child, Paul, on February 2, 1996. They later had two more children, Donnacha and Nell, who was born in 2003.

In honor of their 29th wedding anniversary in 2023, Dearbhla shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, highlighting the ups and downs they’ve experienced together. She wrote, "Paul is my human… There has been magic in the light and dark."

She added that despite the challenges, they have no plans to slow down anytime soon. "We have not reached our destination… we have so, so much more to learn and see together," she wrote.

A Family of Artists

As their careers have taken off, the siblings have remained close. In 2023, Nell and Donnacha joined Paul at Vanity Fair‘s A Night for Young Hollywood event in Los Angeles. Nell was also photographed with Paul at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards.

When Paul received his first-ever Oscar nomination for his role in Aftersun, the entire family celebrated. Nell shared a screenshot on X of their family FaceTime call during which Paul revealed the news, and the entire crew was beaming with pride.

A Career in Service

Dearbhla dedicated her career to serving Ireland’s national police force, the Garda Síochána. She retired in May 2023 after 34 years of service. On Instagram, she shared her excitement for the next chapter of her life, writing, "It has been my honour to serve."

In a 2022 interview, Paul described his mother as "a little bit of a hippie." He mentioned that she practices Reiki therapy and is into crystals. Despite her profession, he said he never faced any issues because of it.

A New Chapter in Acting

Paul Sr. has always had a passion for acting. He began when he was 12 years old, participating in a community theater production. Throughout college and even after becoming a school teacher in 1988, he continued acting on the side. However, he stepped away from the stage in 2013 to focus on his family.

Now that he has retired from teaching, he has returned to the stage. In 2023, he participated in an original production of Are Ya Dancin’?, a musical set in the 1960s. He joked that he has no plans to reach his son’s level of success, but he still enjoys the craft.

Overcoming Adversity

In June 2024, Dearbhla shared on social media that she was in remission after being diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of bone marrow cancer, in 2022. She expressed her gratitude and joy, writing, "I AM IN REMISSION!!! I am Blessed."

During that first year, the family kept her diagnosis private. Paul briefly opened up about his mother’s health while celebrating his Oscar nomination in 2023. Meanwhile, Nell reflected on X, sharing how her mother’s chemotherapy journey intertwined with Paul’s success.

Dearbhla also gave a special shoutout to her medical team, expressing deep gratitude for their support. She wrote, "The love of my children, my husband, my family & dearest friends… carried me through the hard times."
