Avatar: Fire and Ash Continues Dominance at the Box Office

For the fourth weekend in a row, Avatar: Fire and Ash has claimed the top spot at the box office. This achievement marks the first time a film has secured four consecutive weekends at the number one position since Barbie in 2023. However, the movie is showing signs of slowing down compared to its predecessors. This past weekend, it grossed $21 million, representing a 48% drop from the previous week. After 24 days in theaters, the film has accumulated $342.5 million in revenue.

When compared to the performance of Avatar: The Way of Water, which had earned $517 million through the same point in its run, Fire and Ash is trailing slightly. Despite this, the film has still managed to reach $1.23 billion worldwide, leaving plenty of room for further growth. It’s safe to assume that more Avatar movies are on the horizon, and fans can likely expect them.

Primate Makes Strong Debut as New Horror Flick

In second place, the R-rated horror film Primate made a solid debut with an opening weekend gross of $11.3 million. The movie, which has a budget of $21 million, seems to be off to a decent start. While it’s too early to determine if it will become a sleeper hit, the film’s premise—drawing inspiration from a scene in Nope—has generated interest among horror fans.

The Housemaid Holds Strong with Sequel in Development

The third-place finisher, The Housemaid, continued its impressive run by dropping only 25% in its fourth weekend, earning $11.2 million. Its domestic total now stands at $94.1 million, while the worldwide tally reaches $142 million. A sequel is already in development, marking the beginning of what could be a successful franchise for Sydney Sweeney.

Zootopia 2 Remains a Box Office Powerhouse

Zootopia 2 fell 47% this weekend, earning $10.1 million and bringing its domestic total to an impressive $378.8 million. Globally, the film has earned $1.6 billion. Its success has somewhat overshadowed the performance of Avatar: Fire and Ash. Regardless, both films have contributed significantly to Disney’s strong end to 2025 and early lead in 2026.

Greenland: Migration Struggles to Find Its Audience

Greenland: Migration took fifth place this week, but its performance was underwhelming. The original Greenland (released in 2020) managed to earn $52 million worldwide despite being released during the height of the pandemic. However, five years is a long time to wait for a sequel, and this film didn’t seem to generate the same level of excitement. While it was smarter and better than many disaster films, it wasn’t clear that audiences were eager for a follow-up. The movie may find more success internationally and through streaming platforms.

Other Notable Releases This Week

Several other films also saw notable performances this week. Marty Supreme crossed the $70 million domestic mark, while Anaconda surpassed $50 million domestically and $110 million globally. The newest SpongeBob movie reached $63 million domestically and $132 million worldwide. Although SpongeBob likely broke even with its $64 million budget, Song Sung Blue still has a ways to go to recoup its $30 million investment.

Upcoming Releases and Potential Box Office Shifts

Next week promises a mix of new releases, including the re-release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the Shudder original Night Patrol, and the sequel 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Additionally, Hamnet and Dead Man’s Wire will expand to more theaters. If 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple performs as well as its 2025 predecessor, it could potentially dethrone Avatar: Fire and Ash and end its month-long reign at the box office. Stay tuned for next week’s results.
