A Heartfelt Acceptance Speech

During his acceptance speech for winning the Golden Globe for Best Director, Paul Thomas Anderson made a significant statement that highlighted the importance of collaboration and support in the film industry. He specifically thanked Michael De Luca, co-chair and CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, for allowing him to create "One Battle After Another." Anderson expressed his gratitude for the affection and appreciation shown towards him and his film, emphasizing that it was a joy to be recognized for his work.

He began his speech by acknowledging the generosity of the audience and the appreciation he received. "I love doing what I do. So this is just fun," he said, setting a tone of enthusiasm and appreciation. Anderson then took the opportunity to highlight De Luca’s role in his career, stating that De Luca had been a champion for him over the years.

The Influence of Michael De Luca

Anderson went on to credit De Luca, who was present at the event. "I do want that you hear a name over and over again tonight, and it’s Mike De Luca, and the reason why is because he’s behind a lot of these movies." He shared how De Luca had supported him for about 25 to 30 years, encouraging him to pursue his vision as a director.

De Luca’s dream of running a studio one day, where directors could have creative freedom, led to the creation of several notable films. "That’s how you get a ‘Sinners.’ That’s how you get a ‘Weapons.’ That’s how you get a ‘One Battle After Another.’" Anderson concluded his tribute with a heartfelt thank you to De Luca for his unwavering support.

Honoring a Collaborator

In addition to thanking De Luca, Anderson also paid tribute to his assistant director, Adam Somner, who passed away in 2024. "One Battle" was his final film and is dedicated to Somner. Anderson reflected on how Somner contributed to making the film enjoyable. "He’s what made making this so much fun. I think it helped make you all seem to enjoy it the way that you have and thank you very much for this affectionate award."

A Night of Recognition

"One Battle After Another" was the most nominated film of the night, receiving nine nominations. Anderson had already won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture. Teyana Taylor was also recognized for her performance, winning the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. This marked the first award of the night.
