Singapore filmmaker Nelson Yeo has brought together a stellar cast for his upcoming film, "The House on the Moon," a groundbreaking project that blends mythology, science fiction, and martial fantasy. This ambitious feature showcases Yeo’s vision of merging diverse genres to create a unique cinematic experience.

Yeo’s previous work, "Dreaming & Dying," made waves at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival, becoming the first Southeast Asian film to win both the Golden Leopard in the Filmmakers of the Present category and the Best First Feature award. This success sets high expectations for his new project.

Lim Shi An stars as Chang Er, a fairy maiden living in a lunar residence with her lover, Hou Yi, played by Dominick Rustam. The story takes a dramatic turn when Hou Yi disappears during a mission to save the dying sun, prompting Chang Er to embark on a dangerous journey to the moon’s dark side. She is joined by an earthbound bandit, played by Akira Huang, who crash-lands into her world.

In addition to Huang, Harry Chang plays Feng Meng, while Taiwanese actor Lee Kang-sheng, known for his collaborations with director Tsai Ming-liang, portrays Yue Lao. Doreen Toh completes the ensemble as Yin Yuan.

"I grew up watching genre-defying Hong Kong cinema from the 1990s, and that influenced how I see film," Yeo shared. "‘The House on the Moon’ is my way of carrying that spirit forward. I’m thrilled to work with this cast—they embrace the freedom to bend genres and bring physicality and emotional depth to the story."

The production represents a significant collaboration between Singapore and Taiwan, with Momo Film Co and Aview Images serving as producers. Tan Si En, Wendy Lie, and Kuek Shee Heng are also involved in the project.

"As producers, we view ‘The House on the Moon’ as an unclassifiable work that draws from the past while imagining new futures," said Tan from Momo Film Co. "We’re excited to bring Nelson’s reflective and ambitious vision to life alongside a remarkable cast and through meaningful collaboration in Taiwan."

The film’s proof of concept received support from the Singapore Film Commission’s VP Grant, with financing provided by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA). Asian partners 9LB Film and KawanKawan Media have also joined the production.

Kuek of Aview Images commented, "Akira Huang and Harry Chang are widely regarded as two of Taiwan’s most promising young actors. I’m pleased to introduce them to Singaporean director and producers, aiming to expand the presence of Taiwanese talent in the Asian market. Additionally, internationally acclaimed actor Lee Kang-sheng will take on a unique and highly anticipated role in the film, marking an important milestone in his career. As a producer, I’m excited to see Taiwanese actors contribute to this creative and challenging project, which I believe will bring fresh and diverse energy to the production."

Momo Film Co, founded in 2018, has produced several award-winning films, including "Don’t Cry, Butterfly" (Venice winner), "A Useful Ghost" (Cannes winner), and "Dreaming & Dying." The company also runs the Momo Distribution Grant to support regional filmmakers.

"The House on the Moon" is currently in production, with a planned release in late 2026. The film promises to be a standout addition to the growing landscape of genre-blending cinema.
