Hollywood’s Golden Globes: A Night of Surprises and Predictable Wins

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards, held this year, were a mix of expected outcomes and a few unexpected twists. While the event is known for its unpredictability, this year saw a more straightforward result in many categories, with some major contenders taking home the trophies they were widely anticipated to win.

One of the most dominant films of the season, One Battle After Another, took home four awards, including Best Film Comedy/Musical, Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson), Best Screenplay (also Paul Thomas Anderson), and Best Supporting Actress (Teyana Taylor). The film’s success was a strong indicator of its potential to dominate the upcoming Oscar race.

However, the night wasn’t without its surprises. Hamnet, which had been a favorite earlier in the season, unexpectedly won Best Film Drama. This win came as a shock, especially after it had fallen out of the spotlight in recent weeks. The film’s star, Jessie Buckley, also claimed the award for Best Drama Actress, adding to the momentum.

Another film, Sinners, which had been favored to win Best Film Drama, ended up receiving the catch-all category of Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Ludwig Göransson also won Best Score, though this category wasn’t shown during the broadcast.

International films continued to make their mark at the ceremony. Brazil’s The Secret Agent won both Best Non-English Language Film and Best Drama Actor (Wagner Moura). Meanwhile, Stellan Skarsgård, from Sentimental Value, won Best Supporting Actor.

In the Comedy/Musical category, Timothée Chalamet and Rose Byrne took home the lead acting awards for Marty Supreme and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, respectively. These wins highlighted the popularity of these lighthearted films.

One of the year’s biggest hits, KPop Demon Hunters, made a double victory, winning both Best Animated Feature and Best Song for its hit track "Golden."

Television Winners Shine Bright

On the television side, Adolescence continued its dominance by winning Best Limited Series/Movie, Best Actor (Stephen Graham), and sweeping the supporting categories (Erin Doherty and Owen Cooper). Other notable winners included The Pitt for Best Drama and Best Drama Actor (Noah Wyle), The Studio for Best Comedy and Best Comedy Actor (Seth Rogen), and Hacks’ Jean Smart for Best Comedy Actress.

Rhea Seehorn won Best Drama Actress for Pluribus, while Michelle Williams claimed Best Limited/Movie Actress for Dying for Sex. These wins reinforced the strength of the television landscape this season.

New Categories and Emerging Talent

This year’s ceremony introduced a new category: Best Podcast. Amy Poehler took home the inaugural trophy for her podcast Good Hang. This addition signaled the growing influence of podcasts in entertainment and media.
