Marvel’s Unique Marketing Strategy for Avengers: Doomsday

For the past month, Marvel Studios has been actively promoting Avengers: Doomsday through an innovative approach. Each week, they released a new teaser focusing on different characters or groups confirmed to appear in the film. This strategy provided fans with their first glimpses of Steve Rogers, Thor, the X-Men, Wakandans, Namor, and Ben Grimm within the ensemble cast.

This marketing decision has kept the audience engaged and discussing the movie for weeks. However, the response to the four Avengers: Doomsday trailers has been mixed. Without significant character crossovers or a full reveal of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, there were elements that Marvel didn’t showcase which could have generated more excitement. Despite this, a new piece of art has managed to increase anticipation for Doomsday.

Official MCU Art Brings Together Multiple Characters

As part of an event in Japan, a new piece of official MCU art created by Ryan Meinerding, Head of Visual Development and Character Design at Marvel Studios, has captured the attention of the Marvel fandom. This artwork brings together dozens of well-known MCU characters. Members from the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Wakandans are all present, marking the first time most of Marvel’s major characters have appeared together in the MCU.

From right to left, the art features Thor, Loki, Nebula, Wolverine, Korg, Deadpool, Star-Lord, Yelena Belova, Groot, Rocket, Captain America, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Thing, Human Torch, Shuri, Cassie Lang, Wasp, Ant-Man, War Machine, Okoye, Hulk, Iron Man, Vision, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, and Bucky Barnes.

With many of these characters confirmed for Doomsday and some even wearing their current costumes, it’s understandable to assume that this is a preview of what’s to come. The artwork is seen as another way Marvel is building anticipation for the upcoming event film. However, only half of that assumption is accurate.

The MCU’s New Art Isn’t For Avengers: Doomsday

Meinerding confirmed in the press release that the art "has nothing to do with Avengers: Doomsday." Instead, it is meant to celebrate 20 years of Marvel Studios. The artist chose his favorite characters to include in the piece. That’s why characters like Bucky Barnes and the Fantastic Four are shown in their current costumes, while Shuri and Thor’s appearances don’t align with the Doomsday trailers.

Despite not being directly related to Doomsday, seeing all these characters together still adds to the excitement for the movie. One of the most thrilling aspects of the Avengers films is how they bring together different parts of the sprawling universe and create amazing new character pairings.

A Glimpse Into the Future of the MCU

We’ve already seen a taste of this in the Black Panther and Fantastic Four Doomsday trailer, where M’Baku and The Thing met. However, that was just a small glimpse. Even if this art isn’t intended to reflect Doomsday, it gives a sense of what it will be like to see the large cast interact.

The grouping of characters like Captain America, Yelena, the Fantastic Four, and Shuri makes fans even more eager to see them share the screen in Avengers: Doomsday. In this way, the art unofficially teases the upcoming movie, even though it wasn’t designed with the crossover event in mind.
