Sundance Institute Appoints New CEO Ahead of Major Transition
The Sundance Institute has officially announced that David Linde will become its new Chief Executive Officer. His tenure will begin on February 17, following the conclusion of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival—the last event to be held in Utah. This transition comes at a pivotal moment for the organization as it prepares for a major shift in location and leadership.
Linde will succeed Amanda Kelso, who has served as interim CEO since April 2024, when former CEO Joana Vicente left the position. The board of directors expressed confidence in Linde’s ability to lead the institute forward, citing his experience and vision for the future of independent filmmaking.
A Legacy of Support for Independent Filmmakers
Ebs Burnough, chair of the Sundance Institute’s board, highlighted the organization’s long-standing commitment to artistic excellence and the impact of independent film. “For over 40 years, Sundance Institute has stood at the intersection of artistic excellence, audience impact, and industry significance by playing a formative role in shaping the careers of filmmakers and uplifting independent work globally,” Burnough stated.
He emphasized that Linde’s appointment follows a period of interim leadership and that his career has demonstrated exceptional leadership, strategic vision, and a shared commitment to independent voices. “David brings a rare combination of industry fluency, social cause management, and deep commitment to artists, positioning the organization to build on our legacy while advancing our mission for the future.”
A Time of Change for Sundance
Linde is stepping into his new role during a transitional period for the Sundance Institute. The 2026 festival will mark the final year the event is held in Park City and Salt Lake City before moving to Boulder, Colorado. Additionally, this year’s festival will be the first since the passing of Robert Redford, the founder of the Sundance Film Festival.
“I am honored to join Sundance Institute as CEO to steward an organization that is essential to independent artists, the broader creative community, and culture at large,” Linde said. “I look forward to working alongside the staff, artists, partners, and the board to further advance the visionary programs and Festival, while ensuring that bold, original storytelling continues to thrive and that the Institute’s truly central role for creative storytellers and their champions endures.”
A Career Focused on Film and Advocacy
Linde has a long and distinguished career in the film industry. He has served as chairman of Universal Pictures, co-founded Focus Features, and was a partner at Good Machine. He also held the roles of CEO and owner of Lava Bear Films and most recently, CEO of Participant.
In addition to his executive roles, Linde has been actively involved in supporting the film community through various boards and organizations. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the American Film Institute, the Board of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts North America, and the Board of Directors of Film Independent. He was also elected to the Board of Directors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for two terms, including as its Treasurer.
Looking Ahead
With Linde’s appointment, the Sundance Institute is poised to continue its mission of fostering independent storytelling and supporting emerging filmmakers. As the organization prepares for its move to Boulder and the legacy of Robert Redford, Linde’s leadership will play a crucial role in shaping the future of one of the most influential film institutions in the world.
