Jared Paradelecki’s New Netflix Film Changes Title Due to 34-Year-Old Kevin Costner Movie

A New Chapter for Jared Padalecki

Jared Padalecki has long been known for his roles in intense and dark television series such as Supernatural, Walker, and Fire Country. However, the actor is stepping into uncharted territory with his first official romantic comedy. The project, initially titled The Bodyguard, has undergone a significant change, now being rebranded as Guarding Stars.

The title change was announced by author Katherine Center, who shared the update on her Instagram account. Her 2022 novel The Bodyguard served as the basis for the film, but due to the existence of Kevin Costner’s iconic 1992 movie The Bodyguard, the title had to be altered. Center explained that the new title aims to allow the film to stand out and become iconic in its own right.

Prior to the final decision, Center had invited audience suggestions for a new title. After receiving numerous ideas, the production team selected Guarding Stars, which aligns with the story’s themes of protection and connection.

Netflix confirmed the title change on Tudum, describing the film as a holiday romantic comedy. Although no release date has been set, the Christmas setting—unlike the Thanksgiving backdrop in the original book—suggests the movie may not arrive until later this year.

The Story of Guarding Stars

Based on Katherine Center’s novel, The Bodyguard follows Hannah, an elite bodyguard tasked with protecting world-famous movie star Jack Stapleton. To shield him from a stalker without involving his family, she must pretend to be his girlfriend during a visit to his family’s ranch in Montana. As the story unfolds, humorous complications and unexpected twists arise.

Padalecki will star opposite Leighton Meester, who will portray Hannah. The cast also includes country singer Walker Hayes in his acting debut, along with Noah LaLonde (My Life with the Walter Boys), Toby Sandeman (Running Point, Voicemails for Isabelle), Rachael Ancheril, Phil Brooks, and Ava Max. Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum will direct the film, which features a script written by Grant Scharbo, Richard Keith, and Erin Cardillo.

A Genre Shift for Padalecki

This marks a major departure for Padalecki, who has never headlined a romantic comedy. While he hasn’t appeared in a rom-com, he did play a romantic interest in his breakout role as Dean Forester in Gilmore Girls. He was Rory’s first love interest and appeared in several episodes before joining Supernatural in 2005.

In addition to being his first rom-com, Guarding Stars will also be Padalecki’s first feature role in over a decade. His last live-action appearance was in 2009’s Friday the 13th, while his previous role in 2015’s Phantom Boy was a voice performance. The film is set to premiere on Netflix in 2026.
