The 2026 BAFTA Film Awards Longlists: A Look at the Contenders

The 2026 BAFTA Film Awards race has officially begun, and the longlists are revealing a season filled with exciting possibilities. Among the standout films is One Battle After Another, a black comedy action film that has made a strong impression with 16 mentions across various categories. This film appears to be a major force in this year’s awards season. Alongside it, Chloe Zhao’s Hamnet (with 14 mentions) and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners (also with 14 mentions) are also making waves, showcasing a year where auteur-driven dramas are capturing attention.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s film continues its dominance by securing spots in nearly every major category, including Best Film, Director, Adapted Screenplay, Leading Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), and Leading Actress (Chase Infiniti). This performance mirrors its success at earlier ceremonies this season.

Meanwhile, Hamnet, an adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, has landed comfortably in the longlists for Best Film and Outstanding British Film. Stars Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal have also received recognition in the acting categories.

Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler, is proving that genre-bending thrillers can still earn critical acclaim. The film has appeared in several technical categories as well as Best Director, showing that its box-office success is matched by critical respect. While big-budget epics often dominate the spotlight, the Film Not in the English Language longlist highlights the diverse and daring stories being told globally.

Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value continues its impressive run, appearing in the Best Film category as well as other notable sections. However, it faces stiff competition from works like The Voice of Hind Rajab and Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident, both of which have received significant critical praise for their storytelling.

Being on the longlist is just the first step in the awards journey. The next round of voting will determine which films and performances will compete for the prestigious BAFTA trophies.
