LONDON, Ky. (FOX 56) — London Mayor Randall Weddle has officially announced his intention to run for re-election, signaling a commitment to continue the work he has started in the city.

“We got more work to do in London,” Weddle wrote in a Facebook post on Friday, January 9.

The current term has been a challenging one for the London mayor. Over the past several years, the city has faced significant obstacles, including natural disasters such as a devastating tornado, economic pressures, and shifting societal dynamics. Despite these challenges, Weddle emphasized the resilience of the community.

“Through it all, the people of London have shown resilience, strength, and an unwavering commitment to one another. I am incredibly proud of how far we have come together,” Weddle told FOX 56.

In the past year alone, London experienced a deadly tornado, an officer-involved shooting that led to community unrest, and high tensions among city leaders. Weddle was even impeached for a brief period before being reinstated by a court order in September.

Now, Weddle is looking ahead to the next four years with optimism.

“Under my leadership, we did not back down from those challenges. We rebuilt, we invested, and we moved forward. Today, London is in strong shape. Our city is growing, our infrastructure is improving, and we continue to focus on public safety, economic development, and quality of life for our families,” Weddle wrote. “While we have accomplished a great deal, there is still important work to do. I believe the best days for London are still ahead, and I am committed to continuing the progress we’ve made, working every day to make our city stronger, safer, and more prosperous.”

Just days before Weddle filed for re-election, city leaders made progress in reaching a compromise on the city’s budget, which had put first responders and other city employees at risk.

“That’s the other breakthrough today is there’s actually been, for the first time since I’ve been working with the city council, communication between the council and the mayor,” said Chris Wiest, the city council’s attorney. “That’s probably long overdue, and London has needed this for some time.”

Continued efforts at unity are one of Weddle’s focuses, he said.

“Just as we overcame the tornado and other hardships together, we will keep pushing forward with determination and unity,” Weddle wrote. “I am honored to serve this community, and I respectfully ask for your continued support as we work to keep London moving in the right direction.”

According to Laurel County election results, Weddle came out on top in 2022, winning by 13 votes in a close race with now-councilmember Judd Weaver.
