The 38th European Film Awards will be announced tonight in Berlin during the largest gathering honoring Europe’s film sector.
Held in December by tradition, the European Film Academy has chosen to hold this year’s event now in order to more effectively align the award ceremony with the global awards calendar.
Often referred to as “Europe’s counterpart to the Oscars,” Joachim Trier’s family dramaSentimental Valueand Óliver Laxe’s apocalyptic journeySirāthave taken the lead, each receiving four nominations.

Sentimental Value, which claimed the Grand Prix at Cannes last year, is nominated for Best European Film, as well as Best Director for Joachim Trier, Best Actress for Renate Reinsve, Best Actor for Stellan Skarsgård, and Best Screenwriter for Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier.
All well-earned, as the family drama showcases exceptional acting from both Reinsve and Skarsgård, along with a script that delves into troubled family relationships in an emotionally powerful manner.

Elsewhere, Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or winning filmIt Happened by Chance It Was Simply an Accident It Was Just a Mishap It Was Only an Incident It Was Accidental It Was Unintentional It Was a Casual Occurrence It Was a Simple Accident It Was Not on Purpose It Was an Unplanned Eventhas been nominated three times, including for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenwriter for Panahi.The Sound of Fallingalso features three nominations: Best Film, Best Director for Mascha Schilinski, and Best Screenwriter for Schilinski and Louise Peter.
Fifteen films will be in the running for the Best European Film award, after a new regulation allows entries that were nominated for Best Documentary and Best Animation to also be considered for the highest honor.
Oscar-shortlisted Norwegian actress and filmmaker Liv Ullmann (Persona, Scenes From A Marriage) will be awarded a lifetime achievement honor at next year’s EFAs, while Italian director Alice Rohrwacher (La Chimera, Happy as Lazzaro) will receive the European Achievement in World Cinema Award.
