A New Vision for Cross-Country Travel

A groundbreaking proposal is set to revolutionize travel across the United States by introducing a high-speed rail line that could connect Los Angeles to New York City in under 72 hours. This ambitious project, named the ‘Transcontinental Chief,’ has the potential to launch in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and America’s 250th anniversary. The idea comes from AmeriStarRail, a transportation company based in Delaware, which has submitted a detailed plan to Amtrak.

The proposed service would utilize existing Amtrak routes and infrastructure, repurposing them to create a long-distance rail service that passes through major cities such as Kansas City, Chicago, and Philadelphia. Along the way, passengers would enjoy scenic views of the Grand Canyon. Unlike traditional high-speed rail projects that require new infrastructure, AmeriStarRail’s plan leverages Amtrak’s current fleet of coaches, sleepers, and dining cars, along with host railroads like BNSF, Norfolk Southern, and New Jersey Transit.

One of the unique aspects of this proposal is its ability to transport not only passengers but also vehicles, buses, and long-haul trucks. The service aims to combine elements of Europe’s truck transport trains with U.S. passenger rail operations, offering vehicle-boarding for truckers and travelers alongside Amtrak-style accommodations and amenities.

Unlike other recent proposals for upgrading U.S. transit, AmeriStarRail emphasizes that the ‘Transcontinental Chief’ project will be privately funded, requiring no new federal appropriations or legislation. This approach aims to address the financial challenges of Amtrak’s money-losing long-distance trains while creating a profitable future for rail travel.

Scott Spencer, COO of AmeriStarRail, stated that the project represents an opportunity for Amtrak to collaborate with the private sector. He highlighted the potential for a “Golden Age of rail travel” for both passengers and truckers, driven by the ingenuity of free enterprise. The proposal has also been shared with President Donald Trump, Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, and members of Congress.

According to AmeriStarRail, the service could begin operations by May 10, 2026—just weeks before the U.S. co-hosts the World Cup and celebrates its semiquincentennial. The company claims that if operating agreements are secured with host railroads, the Transcontinental Chief can start on National Train Day, serving tourists for the celebrations and the FIFA World Cup.

The proposal suggests a path toward expanding high-speed rail in the U.S. without the delays and costs associated with building entirely new infrastructure. However, the project depends on Amtrak’s cooperation and requires agreements with multiple host railroads. There are also operational challenges, including right-of-way access, scheduling, and safety protocols.

Amtrak has yet to respond to the proposal. If approved, the Transcontinental Chief would replace Amtrak’s existing Southwest Chief and Pennsylvanian services. Although the proposal is still in early stages, it adds momentum to the growing interest in enhanced passenger rail in the U.S., including Brightline’s West Coast expansion and developments in California’s high-speed rail system.

With the countdown to 2026, AmeriStarRail hopes to move the transcontinental train from concept to reality, delivering a new era of cross-country travel just in time for a historic year.
