MELAKA: For at least five generations of Malaysians dating back to 1910, this place has been an institution they’ve all encountered. During the Second World War, it served as the temporary seat of the Japanese colonial government.
However, nowadays, the rooftop at SMK Methodist (ACS) in Tengkera has leakage issues during rainstorms, the blackboards are falling apart, and many of this 115-year-old institution’s desks and chairs remain unchanged from their condition back in the 1970s.
In an effort to maintain and carry forward the tradition of this renowned missionary school, the alumni are arranging a dinner event along with a fundraising campaign aimed at supporting the school financially.
“We are carrying out an extensive renovation, which includes rewiring the whole structure as well as updating the study desks and chairs that have been used since the 1970s,” stated Tan Kim Yoke, who serves as the vice-president of the school’s Old Boys Association.
Tan mentioned that they also plan to renovate the staffroom and give all the classrooms a fresh coat of paint.
“Our aim is to develop an environment that fosters learning, making students feel motivated and ensuring teachers receive the necessary support,” he stated at a Chromebook demonstration held alongside the commencement of the school’s 115th anniversary festivities.
Tan mentioned that the alumni are equally dedicated to updating the school’s educational approach.
“We are committed to digitising our educational approach to align with the current changing landscape, all while maintaining a secure and motivating setting for both learners and educators,” he further stated.
Also attending the event was the Member of Parliament for Kota Melaka, Khoo Poay Tiong.
He mentioned that his committee members were hoping for increased participation from alumni joining the effort to reconstruct the school.
“The participation of alumni is essential not just for financial support but also serves as an inspiration to present students. By linking different generations via a common legacy, we aim to foster a sense of loyalty and pride,” he stated.
Rodney Tan Chai Whatt, who chairs the organizing committee for the school’s 115th anniversary celebrations, mentioned that the fundraising dinner will take place on September 13 at a restaurant in Cheng. This event will provide 100 tables for potential donors.
