The Rise of Rejuran Injections Among American Women

More and more American women are making the journey to South Korea for cosmetic treatments, with one particular procedure gaining significant attention: Rejuran injections. This treatment has become a popular choice among those seeking to enhance their skin’s appearance and texture.

Rejuran involves injecting polynucleotides (PN), a biocompatible material derived from salmon DNA, into the dermis layer of the skin. It is designed to improve the skin environment and stimulate self-regeneration. First introduced in 2014 by South Korea’s Pharmresearch, the treatment has since gained approval in over 20 countries. However, it remains unapproved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As a result, Rejuran is currently available in the U.S. only as topical products such as serums or creams, not as injectables.

This lack of FDA approval has prompted many American women to travel to South Korea for the injections, which are believed to deliver more dramatic results. Social media has played a key role in spreading awareness about Rejuran, with many individuals sharing their experiences and transformations online.

Brittany Yip, a 25-year-old marketer based in New York, is one such example. After learning about Rejuran through social media, she traveled to South Korea for the treatment. A week later, she noticed a significant improvement in her skin’s radiance. Upon returning to the U.S., she received numerous compliments on her glowing complexion.

Michelle Lee, a former editor-in-chief of Allure, also recently underwent multiple cosmetic treatments in South Korea, including Rejuran. She reported that within ten days, her skin looked “insanely better,” with a natural glow and reduced pore size. For the first time in years, she didn’t need any foundation or concealer.

Alex Cho, a 34-year-old advertising director based in Los Angeles, traveled to South Korea for pigmentation laser treatment and also received Rejuran injections. He noted that his skin appeared brighter and felt softer and tighter after the treatment.

Even celebrities like Kim Kardashian have been associated with Rejuran. On her reality show The Kardashians, she mentioned receiving “salmon injections” on her face. While she did not specify where the treatment was administered, her interest in K-beauty is well-known, as evidenced by her Instagram posts about cosmetic treatments in Seoul.

Global Interest in K-Beauty and Cost Considerations

South Korea has long been a hub for skincare enthusiasts, and the global fascination with K-beauty has contributed to the popularity of Rejuran. Catherine Chang, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Beverly Hills, explained that Asian skincare, particularly K-beauty, often leads the way in innovation. The growing influence of K-pop and K-dramas has further fueled this trend.

Despite its appeal, some concerns remain about the safety and long-term effects of Rejuran. Chang expressed caution, noting that while the treatment may be effective, there is still limited data on its long-term impact. Potential side effects include irritation, rashes, and discoloration, as well as the risk of infections.

Connie Yang, a cosmetic dermatologist in Manhattan, emphasized that any injection carries the risk of infection. She advised patients to carefully consider the potential risks before undergoing the procedure.

Trish Bo, a 25-year-old nurse based in Toronto, Canada, chose South Korea for Rejuran due to the significantly lower cost compared to Canada. She reported noticeable improvements around the eighth day, with her skin becoming firmer and more radiant.

As the demand for Rejuran continues to grow, it highlights the increasing willingness of consumers to seek out innovative treatments abroad. While the procedure offers promising results, it also underscores the importance of understanding the risks and ensuring proper medical oversight.
