Quoted by Bloomberg, this ambitious project was developed by Apple’s internal team called ‘AKI,’ an acronym for Answers, Knowledge, and Information.

Their main focus is to create an answer engine, not just a conventional search engine, which is capable of providing direct answers in the form of conversation.

This technology has the potential to become the backbone of Siri, Spotlight, and search functions across Apple’s operating system, from iOS to macOS.

However, it is different from Siri, which currently tends to refer users to web links; this new tool is claimed to be able to ‘browse’ the internet and directly provide the required information in real-time.

Apple is reportedly also developing a standalone application version as well as direct integration at the operating system level.

This step comes at a critical time. Google’s dominance as the default search provider on iPhones, thanks to a multibillion-dollar business agreement, is being closely monitored by U.S. antitrust regulators.
