After remaining at the top of the global box office rankings for a full month, the directorJames Cameron‘s Avatar: Fire and Ashis approaching the $1.5 billion threshold. This weekend, it encounters the first significant challenge of its entire release period in the form of28 Years Later: The Temple of Bones. Both movies are closely matched at the domestic box office, expected to earn approximately $15 million each during the MLK holiday period. However, with a $3.2 million collection on its fifth Friday,Avatar 3surpassed the $350 million mark in domestic earnings. It is still falling behind its predecessors by a significant gap, but has surpassed several previous successful films. Some of the most recent movies that it has beaten include the war dramaAmerican Sniper, the action film Furious 7, and the science fiction third sequelTransformers: The Dark of the Moon.

Earning $353 million from ticket sales within the country so far,Avatar 3 is poised to overtake James Gunn‘s Supermanas early as today. By Sunday, it is expected to enter the top 60 in the all-time domestic box office rankings. In comparison,Avatargenerated $785 million in total, including revenue from re-releases, whileAvatar: The Way of Watergenerated almost $690 million a few years back.Avatar 3 opened to the least-enthusiastic critiques of the bold trilogy, which seems to have affected its box office results. It is almost certain to end up below the $500 million mark domestically and the $2 billion mark globally. It is, however,Cameron’s fourth consecutive film to exceed $1 billion worldwide. This is a remarkable accomplishment. He continuesthe director with the second-highest box office earnings in history, behind only Steven Spielberg. Others who come after him on the all-time top five list include theRusso Brothers, Peter Jackson, and Michael Bay.

Both the “Avatar” and “Transformers” Series Are in a State of Uncertainty

Speaking of Bay, Avatar 3has now surpassed the $352 million total earnings ofTransformers 3, arguably the least appreciated entry in the blockbuster series. Released in 2011, the film was part of the initial wave of major releases that effectively utilized 3D technology in a meaningful way after the firstAvatar‘s success. Bay shot parts of it with 3D rigs, and methodically avoided the darkness problems that previously affected 3D presentations at that time. Most other filmmakers were compelled to have their films go througha post-conversion processthat could ultimately cause the public to lose interest in the technology completely.Transformers 3earned $1.1 billion worldwide despite a reported cost of nearly $200 million. It has thesecond-highest Rotten Tomatoes rating of Bay’s five-film sequence, which concluded with a critical and commercial failureTransformers: The Last Knightin 2017. The series is currently in a state of uncertainty, as is theAvatar series, which was initially planned to include at least two more entries.
