The Return of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are making a big return to the screen with their new crime thriller, The Rip, now available on Netflix. This marks another collaboration between the longtime friends, who first began their professional journey as teenagers in Boston. Their partnership has evolved over the years, but their chemistry remains as strong as ever.

What makes this release particularly exciting is how quickly the film was put together. Writer-director Joe Carnahan managed to secure both stars and their production company, Actors Equity, within 48 hours. Even more impressive is the fact that the script didn’t exist just two years ago. “It almost never happens like that!” Carnahan said, describing the process as “crazy.” But for Damon and Affleck, it’s just another example of how they operate.

“Part of what we pride ourselves on at our company is that we’re all filmmakers, so we can move really quickly,” Damon explained. He noted that Hollywood often moves at a glacial pace, but being a smaller company allows them to act fast. “We’re the bosses now, so we can just kind of push the button and go!”

This isn’t the first time they’ve worked under such tight deadlines. They’ve had experience with fast turnaround projects through their company, which was founded in 2022. “When we did Air together, I think we finished the movie before the deal was papered,” Damon recalled. “Amazon came to us and we were like, ‘No, we’re done with it, here’s the movie!’ They were shocked by that—but that’s how we like to move.”

Affleck added that the cast for The Rip was assembled just as quickly. “We went up and said we think we should do it immediately—here’s Teyana Taylor, here’s Steven Yeun, Sasha Calle, here’s Kyle Chandler.” The rapid casting process highlights the confidence the duo has in their team and their vision for the project.

A Smart and Slick Thriller

In The Rip, Affleck and Damon play Miami cops who stumble upon a stash of $20 million in a safehouse. As they count the money, they must also survive the night as suspicion begins to grow. Damon portrays Lieutenant Dane Dumars, a recently promoted officer, while Affleck plays his friend and colleague, Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne.

There were no issues with deciding who would play which role. “We’re pretty agnostic, especially in a case like this where both roles were excellent,” said Damon. “And we’re director-based—it’s a director’s medium. The director makes that decision,” added Affleck, explaining that Carnahan made the final call.

Damon shared a humorous anecdote about a similar situation from The Departed. “I remember that happened on The Departed where Leo [DiCaprio] liked both roles and I liked both roles, and we just said to Marty [Scorsese], ‘We’re just completely agnostic. What do you think? Your call, you’re the director.’ It’s got to be the director’s vision.”

A Friendship That Translates to Hollywood Success

Throughout the conversation, both actors have been upbeat and lighthearted. When asked about speaking to Carnahan before them, Damon quipped, “My condolences.” Affleck added, “Are your ears ringing? Joe’s got a lot of energy.”

The discussion then shifted to their decades-long friendship and how it has translated into successful collaborations. With over 40 years of friendship, their ability to work well together has been a key factor in their careers. Their Oscar win in 1998 for Good Will Hunting marked a major breakthrough, and they’ve continued to build on that success.

“I’ve had a career that’s been up, down, left, right, center—you name it. So it’s nice to be on this side of things,” said one of them, emphasizing how much their friendship has contributed to their achievements.

Streaming on Netflix

The Rip is now streaming exclusively on Netflix, offering fans a chance to see Affleck and Damon in a thrilling new project. The film showcases their talents and the strong bond they’ve built over the years.
