Top European City Breaks for British Travelers
Every year, millions of Brits take to the skies to explore Europe’s most captivating cities. A recent survey of 1,676 participants has highlighted the most popular spots for a European city break, revealing which cities are capturing the hearts of British tourists.
At the top of the list is Krakow in Poland. This UNESCO World Heritage site received an impressive 92% rating, making it the highest-ranked city in the survey. The city was evaluated on several factors, including accommodation, food and drink, attractions, ease of getting around, shopping, lack of crowds, and value for money. Krakow earned five stars for accommodation, food and drink, and value for money, with an average hotel stay costing £86 per night. One visitor described it as “beautiful” and “mainly unspoilt,” praising its superb food at fair prices and the availability of good-value hotels. The city is also known for its friendly and safe environment.
Krakow’s rich cultural heritage is another major draw, with historical sites such as Auschwitz and the Wieliczka Salt Mine nearby. The city offers something for every season, from a bustling Christmas market in winter to vibrant festivals during the warmer months.
Venice came in second place, scoring 90%. It received high marks for its cultural sights and attractions, as well as its accommodation. One participant called it “an incredible place to visit,” highlighting its romantic and historic charm. However, the city scored lower on value for money (two stars) and crowd levels (one star). On average, a hotel stay in Venice costs £132, significantly higher than in Krakow.
Tied for third place were Spain’s Valencia and Austria’s Vienna, both scoring 89%. Vienna was dubbed “Disneyland for adults” by one traveler, earning five stars for its food and drink, ease of getting around, and cultural sights. Accommodation in Vienna averages £104 per night, though it scored only three stars for value for money. Valencia, on the other hand, received five stars for its food and drink and four stars for being easy to navigate. A hotel stay in Valencia costs around £106, and one visitor praised its medieval center, narrow streets, and old markets.
Istanbul made its debut in the top five, scoring 88%. One tourist called it the “most interesting place” they’ve ever visited, praising its food and drink, cultural sights, and affordability. An average night in Istanbul costs £68, making it a more budget-friendly option compared to other top cities. The Turkish capital also earned four stars for accommodation.
The survey also listed other popular destinations, including Seville, Bordeaux, Prague, Berlin, Budapest, Florence, Funchal, Rome, Nice, Verona, Hamburg, Madrid, Paris, Porto, Stockholm, Bergen, Malaga, Valletta, Barcelona, Bruges, Ghent, Copenhagen, Lisbon, Munich, Athens, Oslo, Riga, Bologna, Dubrovnik, Milan, Amsterdam, Brussels, Cologne, and Dublin.
Cologne and Dublin scored the lowest, with just 69% each. Dublin struggled with value for money and crowd levels, while Cologne was rated average for cultural sights and tourist attractions.
