Outline:
In Brad Silberling’s 1995 children’s horror movie “Casper”(starring Christina Ricci), Cathy Moriarty portrays Carrigan Crittenden, a resentful and greedy woman who has recently inherited a haunted home from her late father. She and her attorney, Paul (Eric Idle), are hesitant to go inside the house due to its supernatural reputation. Viewers will understand, naturally, that one of the four restless spirits residing in the haunted house is actually Casper (Malachi Pearson), a kind-hearted ghost who is frequently tormented by his three ghostly uncles. The PG-rated “Casper” poses no real threat to anyone, and the ghosts are not particularly frightening.
However, at the start of the movie, it was crucial to show that they were frightening enough to prevent Carrigan and Paul from entering the mansion. To convey this to the viewers, there is an opening scene where Carrigan and Paul are outside the house when they hear loud, eerie moans coming from inside. The door suddenly swings open, and Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) rushes out, terrified by what was happening inside. He halts directly in front of Carrigan and Paul and exclaims, “Who you gonna call? Someone else.” Then he runs away.
Ray Stantz was one of the four main characters in the popular “Ghostbusters” film series. Whatever was inside the “Casper” mansion was frightening enough to scare even a member of the “Ghostbusters.” It’s a charming appearance in a delightful movie.
Recently, Aykroyd appeared on the “Talking Strange” podcast (covered by Deadline) to discuss work, and the interviewer asked the actor about his “Casper” appearance. Was it simply a fun, playful nod, or did Ray Stantz’s presence suggest that “Casper” and “Ghostbusters” exist in the same world? Aykroyd confirmed that, yes, it is definitely the latter.

Casper and the Ghostbusters exist within the same fictional world.

It’s important to mention that “Casper” was directed by Steven Spielberg, and his participation in the film led to various guest appearances. At the beginning of the movie, spirits take control of Bill Pullman’s body, making him transform into several famous people. He momentarily resembles Clint Eastwood., Rodney Dangerfield, Mel Gibson, and the Crypt Keeper (John Kassir) from “Tales from the Crypt.” Dan Aykroyd received a call from Spielberg regarding a guest appearance in “Casper,” and Aykroyd was excited about it. When asked if his participation suggested a more extensive storyline linking the two ghost-themed entertainment series, Aykroyd responded effortlessly:
I believe so, considering that Spielberg requested me and said, ‘Come and do this,’ and that they incorporated me into it. […] Naturally, it’s a wonderful tribute to what we were accomplishing with Ivan and everyone else. I think it should definitely be included in the canon.
Ivan, naturally, is Ivan Reitman, the filmmaker behind “Ghostbusters.” And that, as they say, concludes it.
The suggestion in “Casper” is that the ghosts residing in the main haunted house are so frightening that even a veteran Ghostbuster like Ray Stantz would run away in fear. My personal interpretation, however, suggests a different story. Ray, who is typically a kind-hearted person, might have realized that Casper is actually friendly. Ray, touched by the young ghost’s strong personality, and possibly aware of his sad history, explored elsewhere on /Film), simply refused to chase this ghost. He wanted to let Casper be. Who are you going to call? Someone else. Someone less heartfelt and honorable than Ray Stantz.
Now that Casper and the Ghostbusters exist within the same universe, fans might be wondering if another crossover is coming. As of this moment, no such collaborations have been officially announced.
