Central Michigan University (CMU) has introduced a groundbreaking initiative designed to provide students and their families with a clear assurance that earning a college degree will lead to real-world career success. This new program, called the Central Career Guarantee, is set to launch in the fall of 2026 for eligible undergraduate students at CMU’s Mount Pleasant campus and those enrolled in online programs.

Under the Central Career Guarantee, participants will be promised a job offer or acceptance into graduate school within six months of graduation. If this goal is not met, the university will offer $2,000 in financial support and continued career development assistance to help students navigate their next steps.

According to CMU officials, this initiative marks the first of its kind among public universities in Michigan. President Neil MacKinnon emphasized the university’s confidence in its educational approach, stating, “At CMU, we know our approach to hands-on learning, leadership development, and student success works.” He noted that CMU graduates already have a 94.3% career outcomes rate, which further supports the university’s decision to guarantee these results.

Graduates who do not secure employment or graduate school admission within six months of graduation will have access to the $2,000 to use toward student loan payments, extended job or school searches, or other related expenses. They will also continue to receive career coaching and support from the university.

MacKinnon explained that the program is designed to address concerns about the value of a four-year college degree, especially as rising tuition costs and changes in the workforce prompt students to question whether higher education leads to meaningful careers. “Nationally, there’s a misconception that college doesn’t prepare students for the workforce,” he said. “Based on national survey data, we know that most CMU graduates are employed, continuing their education, or engaged in service within six months of graduation.”

The university highlights that CMU graduates earn 26% more than the national median within two years of graduating, according to data from Niche.com. Additionally, CMU is one of only four public universities in Michigan recognized as an Opportunity University by the Carnegie Classifications of Higher Education. This designation acknowledges institutions that promote both access and strong post-graduation outcomes.

To participate in the Central Career Guarantee, students must complete a series of required steps throughout their time at CMU. These include:

  • Regular meetings with academic advisors and career coaches
  • Participation in career development programs
  • Attendance at university-sponsored events
  • Active engagement with faculty

University leaders say the structured approach is intended to keep students on track academically while helping them build professional skills, networks, and experience before graduation.

“Our mission is defined by the success of our students and alumni and by our impact on the communities we serve,” MacKinnon said. “This guarantee reinforces our commitment to student success — not just in the classroom, but beyond it.”
