SELMA, Ala. (WSFA) – Following 14 years of providing coffee and fostering community in downtown Selma, The Coffee Shoppe has officially shut down its Broad Street branch and combined operations with its sister establishment, Reflections Coffee Shoppe.
At noon on Monday, owner Jackie Smith closed the doors at 308 Broad Street for the last time — an event she called heartfelt and mixed with sadness.
I am — I’m not sure, but I’m feeling overwhelmed by emotions,” Smith stated. “It’s somewhat of a bittersweet moment for us today.
Smith launched The Coffee Shoppe 14 years back with the intention of establishing a cozy, inviting area for the Selma residents. As time passed, she notes that it evolved into far more than just a café — transforming into a center for dialogue, interaction, and tourism.
I was thinking of a tiny community coffee shop,” Smith explained. “It has turned out to be much more than that.
As per Smith, the shop catered to patrons from all over the globe, a fact she attributes to Selma’s heritage and its welcoming nature.
“We provided service to individuals from at least five of the seven continents globally,” she stated.
Although the Broad Street location has closed, Smith stated that the company is not ceasing operations. Rather, The Coffee Shoppe has completely integrated into Reflections Coffee Shoppe, which can be found at 1014 Water Avenue.
Reflections provides more area, featuring options for private dining and gatherings, enabling Smith to expand the business while maintaining the same atmosphere patrons have grown to love.
We’ve established a meeting place for the Selma community,” Smith stated. “We have more room at Reflections, so the more people, the better.
WSFA 12 News questioned Smith about her decision to shut down the Broad Street location instead of keeping both stores open. She mentioned that maintaining two coffee shops located just a few blocks apart in a small community would be difficult over time.
“Being a small community, it would be difficult to sustain two coffee shops four blocks apart,” Smith said.
She observed that numerous aspects of The Coffee Shoppe had already been moved to Reflections upon its opening in 2024 — such as the menu items, the logo, and even the spelling of “SHOPPE”— providing consistency for regular customers.
Smith states that her objective going forward is to keep investing in Selma via the combined location, similar to her efforts over the last 14 years.
“I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help from my local community,” she stated.
The Reflections Coffee Shop has commenced operations with updated hours — 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays, and 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays — while preparing for additional services such as evening activities and fresh menu options.
A major combined event, including live performances, special drink offers, a quiz game, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony, is planned for January 5, 2026.
