John Mulrooney, a stand-up comedian, actor and late-night TV host, passed away at the age of 67.
The performer diedat his residence in Coxsackie, New York, on December 29, however the reason for his passing has not been made public yet.
The official obituary released by Casey Funeral Home in Staten Island, New York, described Mulrooney, who previously hosted the weekly Fox program Comic Strip Live and The Late Show, as a ‘much-loved stand-up comedian, committed public figure, and honorable citizen whose life was characterized by dedication, humor, and a strong commitment to those he cared for’.
Born in Brooklyn in 1958, Mulrooney started experimenting with stand-up comedy at the well-known Pips.comedyclub during the early 1970s.
Following his participation in the talent competition show Star Search, he eventually got his major opportunity. Although he did not win the competition, Mulrooney was given a position in the show’s writing team – which subsequently helped him obtain stand-up performances at comedy venues throughout New York.
The comedian later participated in comedy programs such as Comedy Tonight and An Evening at the Improv.

Subsequently, after Joan Rivers left as the host of The Late Show in 1987, Mulrooney was seen as a short-term substitute – yet the position ended up being given to Arsenio Hall.
He subsequently hosted Comic Strip Live on a weekly basis for one year starting in 1989.
Nevertheless, he continued to guest host The Pat Sajak Show on CBS, and appeared in shows such as Ellen, The Good Life, Hardball, and The New Hollywood Squares.
He also starred in the 1989 movie Great Balls of Fire with Dennis Quaid, Winona Ryder andAlec Baldwin.
In 1994, Mulrooney created and performed in two seasons of a comedy series called Midtown North, which was broadcast on Comedy Central.
Nevertheless, Mulrooney eventually departed from Hollywood and returned to her hometown in upstate New York in 1994 to start a new professional journey inradio.
In recent years, he also presented several radio programs for iHeartRadio in New York.
He also appeared multiple times for U.S. troops stationed abroad, with his family stating that “these were among his most cherished experiences, enabling him to contribute to the soldiers and sailors away from their homeland and to provide moments of joy and respite in difficult situations.”
In an interview featuring “Who’s Your Band”podcast, Mulrooney once remembered falling in love with comedy.
“When I stepped onto the stage for the first time at Pips to perform comedy – it felt like being struck by lightning,” he said.
I will never forget that experience. And at that moment, I understood why I was doing what I was doing. I simply loved it, and nothing could stop me. No obstacle would stand in my path.
In 2010, Mulrooney transitioned to a new profession and joined the Coxsackie Police Department as a police officer, remaining in that role until 2024.
Following the announcement of his passing, comedian Andrew Dice Clay expressed his respects to Mulrooney – who had previously backed him during comedy performances.
“I recall the first time I encountered John Mulrooney… Pips Comedy Club in Brooklyn,” he shared onInstagram.
He was truly remarkable and everyone believed he would grow into a huge star. Johnny was tall, attractive, and a former boxer… he also possessed all the necessary elements—the discipline to perform every night, the motivation, the desire and willingness to endure whatever it took to climb to the top.

He never quit and never ceased to strive, which is what matters most in my opinion. Not everyone reaches the summit, and not everyone turns into a celebrity.
John was an exceptional comedian, as well as a pilot and a boxer, and he also worked as a police officer while continuing to perform stand-up comedy. John, you have achieved so much!!!
The comedian’s obituary also mentioned that Mulrooney would be remembered “as much for being a faithful friend to many individuals as for the laughter he provided to numerous strangers.”
‘His voice, his tales, and his essence will remain in the lives of those he influenced.’
