Outline:
The Upcoming 2026 Oscars and the Potential for a Record
In less than two weeks, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will reveal the official nominations for the 2026 Oscars. Among the films expected to make a significant impact are One Battle After Another, Marty Supreme, Hamnet, and Frankenstein. Additionally, Ryan Coogler’s period vampire film Sinners is also positioned as a major contender. Since its premiere, Sinners has been considered a strong awards season candidate, and despite its early release last year, it has maintained a robust presence in key Oscar races leading up to the 98th Academy Awards.
There is no doubt that Sinners will earn Oscar nominations. The central question now is how many it will receive. Discussions have begun about whether the film could potentially break the record for the most nominations ever received by a single movie.
The Current Oscar Nomination Record
So far, the highest number of Oscar nominations any single film has ever received is 14. This record was first set by All About Eve (1950), which achieved this feat. Over four decades later, James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) tied the record. More recently, La La Land (2016) matched the accomplishment, placing it among an elite group of Oscar contenders.
While All About Eve set the nomination record, Titanic holds the record for the most Academy Awards won, with 11. All About Eve and La La Land each won six. However, 14 Oscar nominations remain the benchmark that Sinners or any other film must reach to tie the record.
Can Sinners Break the Record?
Breaking the record for the most Oscar nominations may seem like a daunting task, but for Sinners, it is not entirely out of reach. The film has already secured a strong position in several key categories. It appears likely to be nominated in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It is also expected to be among the first-ever nominees for Best Casting.
That’s 13 nominations right there, just one short of tying the record. The film has also gained momentum in the Best Supporting Actress category due to the growing recognition of Wunmi Mosaku’s performance. It is now more plausible than ever that she could be among the Oscar nominees, bringing Sinners’ tally to 14.
Where Could the 15th Nomination Come From?
The question now is where the 15th nomination might come from. Miles Caton or Delroy Lindo could surprise in the Best Supporting Actor category. The film is also among the 10 films shortlisted for Best Visual Effects, thanks to the digital work involved in helping Michael B. Jordan portray two characters. This could open the door for a nomination in that category.
Another possibility is securing two nominations in Best Original Song. If these opportunities align with the current trajectory of the film, Sinners could potentially secure more than 14 nominations.
A Feasible, Though Uncertain, Outcome
While it is still uncertain whether Sinners will achieve the record-breaking 15th nomination, the fact that it is even a feasible proposition speaks volumes about the film’s strength in the 2026 Oscar race. At this stage, it is not a guaranteed outcome, but the film’s current standing suggests that it is in a very strong position to make history.
