The Rise of Cyclops: From Joke to Icon
For decades, Cyclops has been the subject of countless jokes within the X-Men universe. As the de facto leader of the team, Scott Summers carries a burden that few can truly understand. Over the years, he has faced challenges ranging from betrayal to triumph, and everything in between. Despite his many trials, the character has often been seen as a “square,” a term used by fans to describe someone who is overly serious or uncool. However, this perception is beginning to shift, and the narrative around Cyclops is undergoing a much-needed transformation.
A New Era for Cyclops
The change in perception is not just a result of fan sentiment; it’s also being driven by Marvel itself. With Cyclops set to make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Avengers: Doomsday, the character is gaining new attention. The movie’s trailer featuring Cyclops quickly went viral, with fans across the globe expressing their excitement over how the X-Men hero looked. This moment marks a significant turning point for Scott Summers, as Marvel teases what lies ahead for the character in his next great era.
2026: The Year of Cyclops’ Redemption

Alex Paknadel, the writer behind Cyclops’ upcoming solo series, has confirmed that Marvel will release a five-issue event featuring Scott Summers in 2026. This long-overdue project is generating a lot of buzz among fans, and Paknadel has shared his thoughts on why the sentiment surrounding Cyclops is changing.
“I feel like people who think he’s a square aren’t looking closely enough. He presents as a square because he betrays so little, but he had a deep relationship with one of the most sexually liberated X-Men characters ever, and of course during the Cyclops-was-right era (which I love), we see just how ruthless he can be,” Paknadel said when asked about Cyclops’ unflattering reputation.
Paknadel also pointed out that the change in perception reflects the maturity of the audience. “To be honest, I think it’s a reflection of the maturity of the audience. There are many, many adult X-Men fans now, so it’s easier to relate to the person who has to juggle 80,000 responsibilities without falling apart. That’s just life in the 21st century.”
Why Cyclops Is More Relatable Than Ever
Wolverine has long been the fan favorite, especially since the 2000 X-Men film, which introduced the world to Hugh Jackman’s iconic portrayal of the character. James Marsden’s take on Cyclops was equally compelling, but the film ultimately leaned into Wolverine’s more rebellious persona. The result was that Cyclops was often seen as the more uptight, less exciting member of the team.
However, the kids who grew up watching that film have now become adults, and they’re starting to see Cyclops in a different light. “Wolverine is very easy to relate to when you’re a teenager because – and I say this with love – he gets to cut loose and sulk in the woods from time to time. Scott has to keep the plates spinning,” Paknadel explained.
Cyclops: The Ultimate Hero
Cyclops’ journey has always been defined by his ability to balance duty and destruction. While other heroes can afford to act on impulse, Cyclops must constantly weigh the consequences of his actions. This duality makes him one of the most relatable characters in the X-Men universe.
As Marvel continues to explore the complexities of Scott Summers, it’s clear that the character is no longer just a joke or a sidekick. In 2026, the world will finally see Cyclops for what he truly is: a badass, a leader, and a symbol of strength and resilience. No X-Men fan should ever think otherwise.
