Gus Van Sant’s Dead Man’s Wire had a broad release on January 16, 2026, following its initial showings on January 9. The screenplay was written by Austin Kolodney and is inspired by actual events from 1977, when the well-known American kidnapper, Tony Kiritsis, a real-estate developer from Indianapolis, took Richard Hall, a mortgage company executive, captive.

He set up a shotgun with a wire so that if either of them made a wrong move, Hall would be killed. The standoff continued for 63 hours and turned into a major media story. Gus Van and Austin collaborated with Alan Berry and Mark Enochs on the movie, as they had recorded the entire incident in their 2018 documentary, Dead Man’s Line.

This three-day confrontation was a significant moment for the media and television networks. The movie features Myha’la as Linda Page and Colman Domingo as Fred Temple. Their roles depict media professionals who are intensely reporting on the event and providing all major developments to audiences around the globe.

Similar to a genuine occurrence, where the media closely tracked the 1977 event, the movie portrays the fear, heavy media coverage, and emotional strain from various perspectives, emphasizing how the media storm increased the pressure on an already critical situation.

What is the storyline of Dead Man’s Wire based on?

As reported by IndyStar, on February 8, 1977, Tony Kiritsis visited Meridian Mortgage Company in Indianapolis. He had a loan obligation and was concerned about repaying it. To prevent having to pay, he abducted Richard Hall. Kiritsis fastened a shotgun around Hall’s neck using a wire and connected the wire to himself. This setup ensured that if either of them moved incorrectly, Hall would be killed.

For a duration of 63 hours, Kiritsis detained Hall. He transported him across downtown Indianapolis, and even made him operate a police vehicle. Kiritsis requested $5 million, protection from legal consequences, and a public apology from the mortgage company. On February 10, 1977, he held a live press meeting, shouting and expressing anger before ultimately releasing Hall.

Kiritsis was taken into custody and eventually acquitted due to insanity. He spent many years in psychiatric facilities and was determined to no longer pose a threat in 1988. Kiritsis passed away in 2005. Hall later authored a book detailing the events and died in 2022.
