The award ceremony was hosted by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, who addressed the severe violence and repression in his country.

“Sentimental Value” received five nominations, followed by “Sirāt” with four, and “Sound of Falling” along with “It Was Just an Accident” each having three.

The top film nominations feature narrative features such as “It Was Just an Accident,””Sentimental Value,””Sirāt,””Sound of Falling,” and “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” along with documentaries like “Afternoons of Solitude,””Fiume O Morte!,””Riefenstahl,””Songs of Slow Burning Earth,” and “With Hasan in Gaza,” and animated films including “Arco,””Dog of God,””Little Amelie,””Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake,” and “Tales From the Magic Garden.”

The individuals nominated for director are Yorgos Lanthimos for “Bugonia,” Oliver Laxe for “Sirāt,” Panahi for “It Was Just an Accident,” Mascha Schilinski for “Sound of Falling,” and Joachim Trier for “Sentimental Value.”

Contestants for the screenwriting award include Santiago Fillol and Oliver Laxe for “Sirāt,” Jafar Panahi for “It Was Just an Accident,” Mascha Schilinski and Louise Peter for “Sound of Falling,” Paolo Sorrentino for “La Grazia,” and Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier for “Sentimental Value.”

The award for best European actress is being pursued by Leonie Benesch for “Late Shift,” Valeria Bruni Tedeschi for “Duse,” Léa Drucker for “Case 137,” Vicky Krieps for “Love Me Tender,” and Renate Reinsve for “Sentimental Value.”

The acting award is contested by Sergi López for “Sirāt,” Mads Mikkelsen for “The Last Viking,” Toni Servillo for “La Grazia,” Stellan Skarsgård for “Sentimental Value,” and Idan Weiss for “Franz.”

Top documentary nominees include Albert Serra’s “Afternoons of Solitude,” Igor Bezinović’s “Fiume O Morte!,” Andres Veiel’s “Riefenstahl,” Olha Zhurba’s “Songs of Slow Burning Earth,” and Kamal Aljafari’s “With Hasan in Gaza.”

The European animated feature film award is being contested by Ugo Bienvenu’s “Arco,” Raitis Ābele and Lauris Ābele’s “Dog of God,” Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han’s “Little Amelie,” Irene Iborra Rizo’s “Olivia and the Invisible Earthquake,” and David Súkup, Patrik Pašš, Leon Vidmar and Jean-Claude Rozec’s “Tales From the Magic Garden.”

The contenders for the Discovery Award, which honors a director’s debut full-length film, include Urška Djukić’s “Little Trouble Girls,” Akinola Davies Jr.’s “My Father’s Shadow,” Laura Carreira’s “On Falling,” Murat Fıratoğlu’s “One of Those Days When Hemme Dies,” Mathias Broe’s “Sauna,” and Mara Tamkovich’s “Under the Grey Sky.” The winning film was “On Falling.”

The contenders for the European Young Audience Award include Ugo Bienvenu’s “Arco,” Nóra Lakos’ “I Accidentally Wrote a Book,” and Greta Scarano’s “Siblings.”

Additional honors to be given out on Saturday are those for cinematography, film editing, set design, wardrobe design, makeup and hairstyling, original music, sound, casting director, and visual effects.

At the ceremony, Liv Ullmann will be presented with the European Lifetime Achievement Award, Alice Rohrwacher will collect the European Achievement in World Cinema Award, and the Eurimages International Co-Production Award will be awarded to Maren Ade, Jonas Dornbach, and Janine Jackowski from Berlin’s Komplizen Film, who have worked on “Sentimental Value.”
