— While they may not be in the spotlight, executive protection agents play a critical role in safeguarding some of the most prominent individuals. This week, more than a dozen agents are undergoing specialized training in Arizona, equipping them with the skills needed to protect people in an increasingly complex and dangerous world.

The 40-hour Basic Executive Protection Course, organized by KDI Protective Services, covers a wide range of essential topics. These include techniques for safely moving individuals in and out of vehicles, defensive tactics, and how to identify improvised explosive devices. The course is designed to prepare agents for high-stakes scenarios where quick thinking and precision can make all the difference.

Karl de la Guerra, founder and CEO of KDI Protective Services, emphasized the importance of proper training for these professionals. “Executive protection is a very unique field,” he said. “Agents have to be well-trained in this particular area.”

De la Guerra has been conducting these training sessions in Arizona for the past five years. His program works with agents who protect governors, mayors, and other high-profile individuals across the country. The training is not just about physical skills—it also includes strategic planning and situational awareness.

Charlene Archuleta, who recently joined a governor’s protection detail after working in an investigations bureau, shared her experience. “Before I went to a governor’s detail, I didn’t think that they did anything,” she admitted. However, her perspective changed quickly. “It’s 24-7. You’re there for your protectee 24-7.”

AJ Jackson, chief of staff at KDI Protective Services and a trainer since 2017, noted that demand for such training has increased in recent years. He attributed this to a rise in politically motivated acts of violence and assassinations across the country. “Unfortunately, yes. As the world turns, there’s a lot of safety issues happening in our world,” he said.

De la Guerra added that smaller law enforcement departments have also started seeking training for their officers. He pointed out that it’s not always high-profile individuals who need this type of security. “You don’t necessarily have to be someone of great significance,” he explained. “Things happen in our lives that can raise the level of threat in a particular area. These are the type of officers trained to handle those situations within their communities.”

The training provided by KDI Protective Services is vital in ensuring that agents are prepared for any scenario. From recognizing potential threats to maintaining a constant state of vigilance, the course equips participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect their clients effectively.

As the world continues to face new challenges, the role of executive protection agents becomes even more critical. Their work is often unseen, but it plays a crucial part in keeping important individuals safe in an unpredictable environment.
