Outline:
The 2026 Golden Globes – what a night.
As the evening drew to a close, Julia Roberts stated it had been “a beautiful night to be an artist,” and that was indeed true – even though the realities of the outside world didn’t quite enter the room as they often do.
It was a memorable evening for numerous individuals, including 11 actors and one director who received their inaugural Golden Globe awards, as reported by the organization.
Speaking of that director…
‘A’ major leap for Paul Thomas Anderson
Let the fight to disrupt “One Battle After Another’s” awards season success commence.
The highly praised movie directed by Paul Thomas Anderson won four awards on Sunday, receiving the prize for best musical or comedy film, along with a win for best supporting actress in a film for Teyana Taylor. Anderson also received two separate accolades, one for best director and another for best screenplay. The Globe victories marked the first wins for the “Phantom Thread” director, who had previously been nominated for writing “Licorice Pizza” in 2021.
Anderson, who has been nominated for the Academy Award 11 times, also directed the award-winning film “There Will Be Blood,” along with popular ’90s films “Boogie Nights” and “Magnolia.” Could this year be the one where he finally wins an Oscar? The indications are positive so far.
Not only are the four statues a positive sign for the film’s future, but the room was filled with goodwill towards Anderson, who didn’t attempt to conceal his happiness.
While receiving the award for best director, his second accolade of the night, Anderson remarked, “You all are being very generous in showing this affection for me and this film, and I’ll accept it. I’ll take it with the love it’s given and the appreciation.”

“Countless Conflicts in Sequence” features Leonardo DiCaprio as a once-celebrated revolutionary who ends up confronting sinister forces headed by an intimidating colonel (Sean Penn). DiCaprio and Penn were both recognized at the Globes this year, alongside rising talent Chase Infiniti, who portrayed DiCaprio’s on-screen daughter, and a lively Benicio del Toro as a highly influential karate instructor. The movie was also nominated for best original score.
A question that appeared to be the main topic of discussion on Sunday had no connection to the film’s chances of winning an Oscar, but instead focused on why it was classified as a comedy in the first place, which raises a completely different set of issues.
Misclassification turns into a joke
Individuals who have watched “One Battle After Another”— a gripping thriller and political statement — likely wouldn’t categorize it under “comedy or musical,” but the Globes will do as they please. This year was no different.
This, naturally, is an issue specific to this program since it separates drama from comedy/musical categories – a division that has long puzzled many, especially among those recognized in film.
Presenter Judd Apatow spent a considerable amount of time on stage discussing his ongoing disagreement with the Globes related to this particular matter. In 2015, the Ridley Scott-directed science fiction film “The Martian” was placed in the best musical or comedy category and outperformed Apatow’sactual comedy “Trainwreck,” featuring Amy Schumer and Bill Hader.
“You know Ridley Scott – America’s favorite comedy filmmaker. The director behind hilarious comedies like ‘Gladiator,’ ‘Blade Runner,’ and ‘Alien,'” Apatow quipped during his speech.

The misunderstanding in categories persisted this year. Rose Byrne, who was awarded best female actor in a musical or comedy for the intense film “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You”– which portrays an extremely overwhelmed mother nearing her limit – mentioned in her acceptance speech that she “didn’t sing” in the role.
One thing the Globes can claim: its controversial box office achievement category – which some may find frustrating, as a Netflix film that had a short theatrical run (“KPop Demon Hunters”) was nominated alongside a movie that gained recognition before its release (“Avatar: Fire and Ash”) – did function as planned, withbox office behemoth “Sinners”bringing home the trophy. So perhaps there is –sometimes– a way to the chaos.
The most significant absence: politics
Nikki Glaser, the host of the Golden Globes, delivered a monologue that was incredibly self-aware, with the evening’s master of ceremonies quipping that the event was “undoubtedly the most significant occurrence taking place in the world right now.”
And that was as close to political as the event became for a long time.
Although there have been several years filled with political discussion on stage, this year saw a noticeable lack of such topics, as speakers chose to acknowledge their families and individuals within the Globes ballroom instead of addressing the significant issues beyond it.
The crimson carpet told a somewhat different tale. Multiple celebrities such as Mark Ruffalo and Jean Smart donned “Be Good” pins to show solidarity with Renee Nicole Good, the Minnesota mother who wasshot and murdered by ICE officers last week.
Clever, who received a Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy, subsequently commented toExtraregarding her choice to express a political opinion at an awards ceremony, she acknowledged that some individuals might not always wish to listen to what celebrities have to say about global events.

I have conflicting emotions about becoming political or offering social commentary at an awards ceremony,” she stated, later expressing that she believes “we’ve reached a critical moment where everyone needs to awaken, open their eyes, and be courageous and composed, while also striving to be engaged.
“Follow your moral compass and remain engaged,” she stated.
Adolescence” author Jack Thorne also addressed social issues in his acceptance speech, stating that “eradicating hatred is our generation’s duty.
He remarked, ‘It demands consideration from the highest level down.’ ‘The chance appears slim at the moment, but optimism is a remarkable concept.’
While presenting the award for best director, Apatow made a comment that “we’re in a dictatorship now,” but quickly shifted the mood by joking that he was mainly concerned with getting justice for his film’s loss from a decade prior.
Spare thoughts
The night on the television side was mostly expected, with Noah Wyle taking home the award for best actor in a TV drama for “The Pitt” and Jean Smart receiving the Globe for best actress in a TV comedy for “Hacks,” a role she also won for in 2022 and 2025.
A first-time winner managed to make it into the lineup, though: Rhea Seehorn, who won her very first Globe for her role in the Apple TV science fiction series “Pluribus,” which was an unexpected highlight during the evening’s television awards, especially since she competed against established stars like Kathy Bates and Helen Mirren.
While speaking, she expressed gratitude to Vince Gillian, the founder of “Pluribus”– also known for creating “Better Call Saul,” in which Seehorn appeared – for “writing me the role of a lifetime.”
Regarding other first-time winners, the evening began with an emotional moment due to Taylor, the star of “One Battle,” who won for her portrayal of the strong Perfidia Beverly Hills.
In her emotional acceptance speech, Taylor spoke to her “brown sisters and the little brown girls watching tonight,” stating, “our gentleness is not a weakness.”
Our depth is not a burden, nor is it excessive,” she stated. “Our light doesn’t require approval to glow. We are rightful in every space we enter. Our voices hold significance and our aspirations deserve a place.
Other significant speeches featured Timothée Chalamet’s, who previously expressed his desire to become “one of the greats” while on an award stage. When he once again was in the spotlight on Sunday following his win for best male actor in a musical or comedy for his portrayal of a ping pong talent in “Marty Supreme,” he adopted a more modest approach in his acceptance speech, sharing a life lesson imparted by his father.

My father taught me to have a heart full of appreciation during my childhood. Always be thankful for what you possess. This has enabled me to leave this event without anything in my hands, yet with my head held high, feeling grateful just to be present,” Chalamet mentioned. “I would be dishonest if I claimed those moments didn’t make this one even more delightful.
Regarding speeches, we listened to a few from the cast of “Adolescence”— specifically three, following the success of the show’s actors Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, and Erin Dougherty, who each won awards in their categories.
It somewhat feels like we’ve been seeing these actors win awards for this show for ages, so it’s worth mentioning that tonight could be the night that ends the “Adolescence” celebration in the show’s highly successful award journey.
Who might I see next year? Sophomore Golden Globes host Nikki Glaser, whose intense opening speech had celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and Julia Roberts responding with humor.
