A Woman Arrested for Felony Littering After Illegal Homeless Encampment Found in Ocala

A woman in Florida has been arrested and charged with felony littering after local law enforcement discovered over 14,000 pounds of trash and hazardous debris at an illegal homeless encampment in Ocala. The incident was reported by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, which highlighted the severity of the situation.

Laura Roland Gherman is alleged to have been trespassing on the property and was given instructions to leave the area and remove the accumulated waste. She was reportedly offered assistance from county resources to clean up the site. However, she failed to comply with the order.

On July 17, deputies arrived at the location and found a makeshift structure at the homeless encampment surrounded by large mounds of garbage, human waste, drug paraphernalia, shopping carts, and bike parts. This discovery was reported by FOX 35 Orlando.

The Marion County Solid Waste department was called in to manage the cleanup operation. It took two days and involved more than 40 workers along with heavy machinery. In total, crews removed 14,260 pounds of trash from the site.

Under Florida law, dumping more than 500 pounds of litter is considered a felony offense. As a result, Gherman was arrested and charged with both trespassing and felony littering on July 21.

County Commission Chairman Kathy Bryant expressed the county’s commitment to public safety and preserving the natural beauty of Marion County. “We are fully committed to protecting public safety while also preserving the natural beauty that makes Marion County special,” she said in a statement following Gherman’s arrest.

This is not the first time this year that someone in Ocala has faced charges related to felony littering. In February, a code enforcement officer discovered over 3,000 pounds of trash dumped off an Ocala road. Among the debris was a box containing the name of 22-year-old Reynaldo Chicha’s mother, as reported by Ocala News.

Deputies investigating the illegal dumping tracked down Chicha and spoke to his mother, who informed them that her son handles all of her trash. When questioned about the dump sites, Chicha initially denied involvement, claiming that wind sometimes blows trash from his yard into the street.

However, after being shown photos of the site, Chicha reportedly admitted to dumping the trash. He has since been charged with felony littering.

Other Cases of Littering in the Area

  • February Incident: A code enforcement officer found over 3,000 pounds of trash dumped off an Ocala road. A box with the name of Reynaldo Chicha’s mother was among the debris.
  • July Incident: Laura Roland Gherman was arrested for allegedly failing to remove trash from an illegal homeless encampment, leading to the removal of 14,260 pounds of waste.

These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges communities face in dealing with illegal dumping and the need for strict enforcement of environmental laws. Local authorities continue to take action to ensure that such behavior does not go unchecked, emphasizing the importance of community responsibility and environmental stewardship.
