A follow-up to Ryan Coogler’sSinnersit appears that it must be considered by Warner Bros. The 2025 vampire filmstarring Michael B. Jordanremains a solo movie for the time being, but as the film’s editor Michael P. Shawver recently shared, there have been discussions about a potential follow-up. As per Shawver, Coogler has not shown any signs of creating anotherSinners film — but if he does, the director already has several intriguing concepts to think about.
Shawver talked to CBRduring the Critics Choice Awards, where he was nominated for Best Film Editing, but eventually fell short toF1. Talking about Sinners 2, the editor mentioned thatCoogler “isn’t interested in a sequel”. And I see why. I have presented him with around five or six of them, and each one is intriguing.” When asked about these proposals, Shawver mentioned that one potential development could delve into “different time periods,” even suggesting a possible prequel that recounts the twins’ experiences in Chicago prior to their arrival in Clarksdale:
I believe it’s set in different periods, you know, and one of the great aspects of Sinners is that we have vampires, we have blues, all the usual elements. However, there’s some history in there that I think people are discovering that they weren’t aware of regarding the economy of that era.
Or what individuals experienced, you know, after slavery, before modern times, and how would they be impacted during each era? You could even look back to the 1920s, when Smoke and Stack were in Chicago.
Once more, Coogler or Warner Bros. have not announced a sequel or prequel toSinners, but Shawver is confident there’s sufficient content to create another film: “Knowing that Ryan would approach it with such detailed craftsmanship, and obviously the team he brings on board and the actors he selects, you know, we all put everything we can into making it as authentic as possible.”
“Sinners” Generates Early Oscar Attention as One of the Ceremony’s Top Contenders
The competition for accolades is just starting, and as anticipated,Sinnershas become one of the top favorites during Hollywood’s most hectic time. Its financial success was impressive enough to label it among the most significant horror movies of the year, butSinnerscould genuinely create award history, as few films in this genre receive the acknowledgment they merit. Alongside Zach Cregger’sWeapons, Sinnerscould serve as a new exception to the norm.
At the Critics’ Choice Awards,SinnersWon four out of its 17 nominations. At the Golden Globes, the film received a total of seven nominations, including Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Motion Picture Drama. Oscar nominations have not been revealed yet, but it seems promising forthe terrifying sensation of 2025.
