A New Voice in Comedy: The Making of Idiotka

Nastasya Popov, a first-time filmmaker, has made waves with her debut feature Idiotka, a satirical take on the fashion industry and reality television. The film features an impressive lineup of comedy stars and has already garnered attention since its premiere at last year’s SXSW festival. It is set to have a theatrical release later this year from Utopia.

The story follows Margarita, played by Anna Baryshnikov, who lives in a crowded home in West Hollywood and dreams of competing on a reality show for aspiring fashion designers. Baryshnikov, known for her role in the series Dickinson and as the daughter of famed ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, leads a cast that includes Camila Mendes, Mark Ivanir (Emilia Pérez), and Galina Jovovich, whose daughter is Milla Jovovich. The film also showcases rising comedic talent such as Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), Benito Skinner (Overcompensating), Owen Thiele (Adults), and rapper Saweetie.

During a conversation following the film’s screening at the Palm Springs Film Festival, Popov shared how she managed to assemble such a notable cast for her directorial debut. Growing up with Russian immigrant parents, Popov reached out to a mutual friend to pass along an early draft of the script to Baryshnikov. The actress then helped shape the lead character. After Baryshnikov filmed a sizzle reel to help secure funding, Mendes joined as both a producer and star.

"Camila was friendly with Benny [Skinner], and he’s amazing," Popov said. "And then I showed up at Julia Fox’s book talk and handed her a letter. It was very DIY and grassroots, but our approach was always, ‘We’re making a movie in L.A. What’s the worst they’ll do? They’ll say no to us. So let’s try to get every cool, funny person we can.’ Enough said yes, and it became this gorgeous ensemble."

Filming and Inspiration

Popov shot parts of the film at her grandmother’s apartment in Los Angeles. While the movie includes dramatic scenes where Margarita deals with family issues, it also leans into the humor that comes from poking fun at reality TV tropes, especially the exaggerated personalities of onscreen judges. Popov cited Project Runway and HBO’s The Hype as inspirations for the narrative and comedic elements.

"It was funny to me to see the evolution of the fashion reality show, and also think about reality TV as an engine for how artists these days are expected to bare their souls on a platter," Popov explained. "That’s just right for comedy and also very true to our world. It was fun to explore."

Critical Reception

In her review of Idiotka for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Angie Han praised the film, writing, "Popov has a great feel for the easy warmth coursing between every member of the family, even in moments of strife, and the cast share a fun and comfortable chemistry."
