The Healing Power of Miniature Horses

Miniature horses, often seen as cute and cuddly, have a surprising ability to bring comfort, connection, and hope to people in need. In an era where mental health crises are on the rise and many elderly individuals pass away alone, these small but powerful creatures are making a significant impact.

Cherene Robertson, a former NHS medic from Scotland, has created a unique team of 10 highly trained miniature horses that travel across schools, universities, and care homes. She calls them her ‘hoof gang’ and believes they can support anyone in need, from anxious students to children with autism and individuals facing difficult diagnoses.

“There is something about a horse that no other animal has,” she says. “They all have therapeutic benefits, but a horse is on a completely different level about what they do for you. They get you through that bad day and they’re just incredible beings.”

In 2021, Cherene founded Lunar Eclipse, a non-profit organisation focused on redefining equine-facilitated learning and wellness. Each of her horses undergoes specialized training to remain calm in noisy or unpredictable environments before they start their work. Despite their small size, each horse has a big personality. One tiny Falabella is known for his love of Netflix, while others have unique roles and quirks.

One standout member of the hoof gang is Apollo, an American miniature horse with a special gift. He visits care homes, schools, and events, seeking out those who need him most. His talent became evident when he formed a deep bond with a terminally ill care home resident named Stuart.

“Apollo just quietly walked in, his little hooves on the flooring, and suddenly this massive smile came on Stuart’s face,” Cherene recalls. “Apollo went straight to him, and he put his muzzle right into the crook of Stuart’s neck and shoulder, and he just snuggled in and breathed on him.”

Stuart’s demeanor changed dramatically after the encounter. He became calmer and more relaxed. When it was clear that Stuart had only days left, Cherene rushed to get Apollo there. As they arrived, Stuart had already passed away, but the care home staff allowed Apollo into the room to say goodbye.

“We went in to pay our last respects to Stuart, and Apollo just completely snuggled into him. He was a bit confused,” Cherene remembers. She believes the tiny horse provided immense comfort to Stuart during his final days, ensuring he wasn’t alone.

Later, Cherene received another call—this time, a request for Apollo to be with Stuart one last time. “They asked us to walk the hearse down. And when they took out Stuart’s coffin, Apollo went over and touched the coffin with his muzzle.”

Apollo isn’t the only horse in Cherene’s team that has transformed lives. Bubbles, a British miniature horse, helped a non-verbal child named Conor learn to speak. Initially, Conor showed great interest in the horses at school, even going home and saying “horses horses” to his parents.

His mother later shared how surprised she was. “I’ve never known my son first of all to come home and tell me anything about school let alone keep talking about horses.” Cherene arranged for Conor to visit the horses, and soon, they formed an incredible bond.

“Every time he came, there was another leap of progress and another leap and another leap. Now, Conor can understand much more past, present and future tense. He can have a much more structured conversation,” Cherene says.

These stories highlight the profound impact that miniature horses can have on human lives. Their presence brings comfort, connection, and healing in ways that few other animals can. From helping children find their voice to providing solace to those nearing the end of their lives, these tiny horses prove that healing can come in the smallest of packages.
