KPop Demon Hunters Dominates Awards Circuit

KPop Demon Hunters has been making waves in the awards scene, securing both Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the Golden Globes. The film also repeated its success by winning the same categories at the Critics Choice Awards last week. This double win highlights the film’s growing influence and recognition in the entertainment industry.

The victory came just two days after the film was notably absent from the BAFTA longlists, marking the first time KPop Demon Hunters has missed out on a Best Animated Feature category this award season. Despite this setback, the film continues to hold a strong position in the Oscar race.

Before the Critics Choice Awards, KPop Demon Hunters faced competition from Zootopia 2, which briefly reclaimed the top spot in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds due to its impressive $1.6 billion global box office earnings. However, KPop Demon Hunters has since reasserted its dominance, leading the Best Animated Feature race with a 95.5% chance compared to Zootopia 2’s 94.5%.

The film’s fictional band members—Ejae (Rumi), Audrey Nuna (Mira), and Rei Ami (Zoe)—continue to receive accolades for their chart-topping anthem "Golden." This song is also up for multiple Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year.

During her acceptance speech for Best Original Song, Ejae shared an emotional story about her journey. "When I was a little girl, I worked tirelessly for 10 years to fill one dream: to become a K-Pop idol," she said through tears. "I was rejected and told that my voice wasn’t good enough; I leaned on songs and music to get through. Now I’m here as a singer and a songwriter, and it’s a dream come true to be part of a song that is helping other girls, other boys, and everyone of all ages to get through their hardship and accept themselves."

While Zootopia 2 may be trailing behind in the Oscar race, it remains a financial powerhouse. The film is the second-highest-grossing movie of 2025 globally, surpassing other Disney releases like Avatar: Fire and Ash and Lilo & Stitch. It has the potential to reach the $2 billion mark by the end of its theatrical run, although it would still fall short of last year’s biggest blockbuster, the Chinese-language cartoon Ne Zha 2, which grossed $2.3 billion but was not submitted for Oscar consideration.
