- Australian shared challenges of managing a business
- He ran out of funds on two occasions and his storage facility was stolen from.
Stefan Di Benedetto’s loved ones believed he was insane when he took a pivotal risk that altered his life.
The MelbourneThe project manager was employed by one of Australia’s leading construction firms when he risked it all to start his own venture.alcoholStartup Solbevi in August 2023.
Despite lacking any industry experience, hesoon reached a distribution agreementin collaboration with retail giant Dan Murphy’s, Australia’s first limoncello spritz in a can will be available in nine stores.
Mr. Di Benedetto left his well-paying position and invested all of his savings into the company.
He worked night shifts in construction and served at his local pub on Sundays for nearly two years, dedicating up to 90 hours each week to growing the business, which involved significant sacrifices and difficulties.
The company ran out of funds twice, while facing ongoing rejections from hospitality professionals, and a break-in at a warehouse early one morning several months back had both financial and emotional consequences.
But Solbevi not only endured, it has flourished.
Solbevi is available in over 2,500 retail locations throughout Australia, such as the bottle shop chains Dan Murphy’s and Liquorland.

After a successful global debut in New Zealand, Solbevi is now focusing on South-East Asia, having recently entered the markets of Malaysia and Singapore.
Solbevi was available at the F1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne this year, alongside various AFLW matches and numerous events.
The company provides in-flight drinks for airlines Qantas and Scoot and has received the title of best liqueur in the world from US Spirits Ratings.
“The past two years have been draining,” Mr. Di Benedetto remarked.
We have exhausted our funds on two occasions, affecting our cash flow.
Capital acquisition failed three times when it was time to sign the agreement, which nearly destroyed me.
We suffered a loss of $20,000 in equipment and inventory due to the break-in – an obstacle that had not been anticipated.
I used up my personal savings while traveling abroad extensively to present my ideas, with no certain results.

We hadn’t yet secured the full amount of capital until four months ago. However, our growth has enabled us to succeed.
Every skill he has acquired was gained through practical experience.
“We launched the company without any prior experience in marketing, sales, or distribution,” Mr. Di Benedetto stated.
Everything needed to be acquired from the ground up. The most effective approach was to gain knowledge through practical experience and by learning from the poor choices we encountered.
Everyone, even my parents, believed we were insane. However, I paid no attention to their opinions.
I don’t have any regrets. The one thing I wish we had done was to join TikTok sooner, which has the potential to transform a business overnight.
Mr. Di Benedetto conceived the notion of creating Australia’s first canned limoncello during the Covid lockdown and dedicated the following years to figuring out how to manufacture it on a large scale and establish the brand.
The beverage industry is among the most competitive sectors globally, dealing with a combination of difficulties such as decreasing usage and shifts in customer preferences alongside increasing operational expenses.

“Bringing limoncello into a market that was already crowded, where the category was unknown, meant we had to teach people from the very beginning,” Mr. Di Benedetto stated.
We also needed to account for the fact that individuals are consuming less alcohol than in the past.
The following objective is to grow the brand even more on a global scale.
“My goal is to establish Solbevi as a brand that can be appreciated throughout the year and compete with Aperol and Campari in bars around the world,” Mr. Di Benedetto stated.
He cautioned aspiring business owners that launching a startup is not suitable for those who lack determination.
“Running a product-based business can be costly, so make sure you have a way to generate income,” he stated.
But spend all of your personal funds first; you’ll protect it with your life, which implies you’ll make wiser and more carefully considered choices. It can help minimize expensive errors.
And, get ready for an entirely new realm of hard work. If your goal is a regular life and managing a start-up, consider it carefully. Your start-up will become your life. Therefore, you must be passionate about it.
