A Real-Life Hero: Actor Steps In to Stop a Crime
Jeff Stewart, an actor who spent nearly 25 years playing a police officer on the long-running ITV drama series The Bill, has recently made headlines for his real-life involvement in stopping a crime. His experience as PC Reg Hollis on the show seems to have translated into a remarkable act of civic duty.
The Long-Running Role
From 1984 to 2008, Jeff Stewart portrayed PC Reg Hollis on The Bill. This police procedural series focused on the daily lives and work of officers from different ranks, showcasing their experiences on the beat and in investigations. Stewart joined the series in its first year and appeared in the premiere episode titled Funny Ol’ Business – Cops & Robbers. By 2007, he was the last original cast member remaining from that first episode. His character was written out of the show the following year, and the series concluded in 2010.
A Surprise Encounter
Now 69, Stewart has taken inspiration from his on-screen persona to assist in a real-life arrest. Earlier this week, Mohamed Diallo, a 29-year-old Southampton resident, appeared at Southampton Magistrates’ Court, where details of the incident were revealed. According to reports, Diallo had attempted to shoplift and flee on a bicycle.
Stewart intervened by sitting on the suspect’s legs after he fell from the bike, while officers worked to handcuff him. Hampshire Constabulary shared a statement highlighting the unexpected nature of the event, noting that it wasn’t something they would have scripted for The Bill.
A Helping Hand
The officers involved were part of the Bargate Neighbourhoods Policing Team when they received a tip-off about a suspected shoplifter at a Co-op store on Ocean Way. As the suspect tried to escape on a bicycle, he fell off during his attempt to flee. Officers quickly moved in to make the arrest. To their surprise, Stewart arrived on the scene and helped by sitting on the suspect’s legs while the officers secured him in handcuffs.
A video of the arrest released by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary shows the officers thanking Stewart before asking for a group photo. He responded with a simple yet proud statement: “No, sure, man. Well, I was in The Bill for 24 years, in the TV show. Yeah, I played Reg.”
Legal Consequences
Diallo faced charges for five counts of theft, including stealing £17.25 worth of coffee from a Co-op on July 23, £69.90 of coffee and food items on July 17, and £54.50 of alcohol and coffee from the same shop on July 14. He also admitted to stealing £80 of wine from a Sainsburys on July 14 and £63 worth of alcohol from another store on April 22. He pleaded guilty and was released on bail, with a sentencing date set for August 29.
Legacy of The Bill
During its run, The Bill became a launching pad for many actors. Notable names include Keira Knightley, David Tennant, James McAvoy, Sean Bean, and David Walliams. The show’s realistic portrayal of police work and its diverse cast contributed to its lasting impact on British television.
