A New Chapter for Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal

Twenty-five years after their iconic collaboration in Donnie Darko, Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal have reunited for the upcoming film The Bride! This marks a significant moment for both siblings, as they once portrayed Donnie and Samantha Darko in the 2001 cult classic. Now, Maggie has taken on the role of director and writer for this new project, which is inspired by Bride of Frankenstein. Jake, on the other hand, has joined the cast, continuing their professional bond.

During a virtual press conference hosted by Collider’s Perri Nemiroff on January 13, Maggie discussed her decision to cast her brother and husband, Peter Sarsgaard, in the film. She humorously mentioned that she chose her husband because she wanted the character Wiles to be "super, super hot." However, she quickly clarified that the real reason for selecting him was his ability to portray a complex character who balances dark actions with heroic traits.

Maggie also shared her thoughts on working with Jake again, calling it "a pleasure." She noted that Jake was one of the last people she approached for the role. His character is a matinee idol in movies, requiring him to create old films within the movie. Maggie emphasized that she asked Jake at the last minute to ensure it was right for their relationship. She spent time reflecting on the decision and ultimately felt confident it was the right choice.

Working with her brother was a joy for Maggie, as she recalled laughing so hard that tears streamed down her face. She expressed how special it was to work with family, noting that there’s something unique about collaborating with a sibling.

The Story Behind The Bride!

Similar to Donnie Darko, The Bride! incorporates elements of science fiction and mystery. The film stars Hamnet star Jessie Buckley as the titular character, who is created from a corpse by Dr. Euphronius (Annette Bening) at the request of Frankenstein’s creature (Christian Bale) in 1930s Chicago. Their story will likely be central to the criminal investigation led by Wiles.

Although Wiles is not the main character, Maggie emphasizes that he is a complex individual with a dark past and heroic qualities. While the roles of Buckley, Bale, Bening, and Sarsgaard are known, Jake’s character remains a secret.

The Legacy of Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko is now considered one of Jake Gyllenhaal’s best films, but its initial reception was quite different. The movie, released a month and a half after the September 11, 2001 attacks, faced limited advertising due to the tragic events. As a result, it underperformed at the box office, earning only $517,000 against a $4.5 million budget.

However, over time, Donnie Darko gained a cult following and was re-released in theaters, performing well in home video sales. The film follows Donnie, a struggling teenager who begins seeing a giant bunny rabbit named Frank, who warns him about the world ending in 28 days. Directed and written by Richard Kelley, the film features a stellar cast including Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Noah Wyle, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Seth Rogen, and Ashley Tisdale.

A quarter of a century after its debut, the ending of Donnie Darko continues to spark debate among fans. With their latest collaboration on The Bride!, Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal have the potential to leave a lasting impact on the film industry. The movie is set to release in theaters on March 6.
