When actor Heath Ledger passed away at the age of 28 in 2008, the world was left in shock and mourning. Though he had not yet reached his 30s, Ledger had already built a remarkable acting career, with standout performances in films like "Brokeback Mountain," "Lords of Dogtown," and "The Dark Knight." His role as the Joker in "The Dark Knight" earned him a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, cementing his legacy as one of the most talented actors of his generation.

Before becoming a global icon, Ledger played the role of Patrick Verona in the 1999 high school rom-com "10 Things I Hate About You." The film, a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s "The Taming of the Shrew," featured Ledger opposite Julia Stiles as Kat Stratford, a character known for her sharp wit, love of Thai food, and feminist ideals. Alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larissa Oleynik, the movie became a cult classic.

Casting Patrick Verona was a challenge for the filmmakers until Ledger auditioned. Director Gil Junger described the character as needing to be "masculine without trying to be masculine, smart, removed, and unbelievably charming." After watching Ledger’s audition tape, Junger was so impressed that he insisted on casting him immediately. He famously said, "Ladies, I have never wanted to sleep with a man, but if I had to sleep with a man, that would be the man. Please cast him immediately."

The making of an iconic scene

The cast of "10 Things I Hate About You" developed a strong bond during the filming process. Joseph Gordon-Levitt recalled that "we had such a good time. All of us hung out, all the time." This camaraderie made the loss of Ledger even more painful for the group. In later interviews, the cast reflected on how much Ledger brought to the film.

Julia Stiles shared a memorable moment from the set when asked about her favorite memory of working with Ledger. She spoke about the scene where Patrick serenades Kat with "Can’t Take My Eyes Off You" from the bleachers. "My favorite memory of that day – the whole day, was just phenomenal," she said. "I mean, like, running up and down those stadium steps and nobody knew he had this amazing voice. He just went full out, and I got to watch it."

Interestingly, the choice of song was influenced by Ledger himself. Initially, the writers were considering "I Think I Love You" by the Partridge Family or "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls. Ledger had specific ideas about what his character should wear for the scene, adding another layer of depth to his performance.

Though Ledger’s time in the film industry was short, his impact was profound. His talent, charisma, and dedication to his craft left a lasting impression on everyone who worked with him. Even today, fans continue to celebrate his contributions to cinema and pop culture.
