Kathleen Kennedy Exits ‘Star Wars’ and Lucasfilm

A New Chapter for Lucasfilm

Kathleen Kennedy, a key figure in the Star Wars universe, has officially stepped down from her role at Lucasfilm after over a decade of shaping the galaxy far, far away. This decision has sparked mixed reactions among fans, with some viewing it as a new hope and others fearing it might be the empire striking back. Kennedy’s time at Lucasfilm has been marked by controversy, and the announcement of the studio’s new leadership—EVP and chief creative officer Dave Filoni and current president & GM of Lucasfilm business Lynwen Brennan—has only added to the discussion.

Kennedy made the news official in a statement, expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to work with the talented team at Lucasfilm. She emphasized the importance of creativity and dedication, highlighting the accomplishments achieved together. While her departure is not immediate, she will continue to serve as a producer on projects like The Mandalorian and Grogu, as well as Star Wars: Starfighter.

A Controversial Legacy

Before joining Lucasfilm, Kennedy had already built an impressive career as a producer, working on iconic films such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Gremlins, Twister, and Poltergeist. Her selection as a leader for Lucasfilm came when George Lucas sold the company to The Walt Disney Company in 2012. Kennedy played a crucial role in revitalizing the Star Wars franchise, starting with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. This film was a critical and commercial success, earning over $2 billion worldwide.

Following this, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in 2016 became the first official spin-off from the Skywalker Saga, grossing over $1 billion. However, the release of Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017 led to one of the most polarizing fan reactions in the franchise’s history. Despite its financial and critical success, the film faced backlash for its narrative choices and treatment of iconic characters. The subsequent release of Solo: A Star Wars Story failed to meet box office expectations, further complicating the landscape.

Mixed Reactions and Public Perception

For many fans, the successes and failures of the Star Wars franchise were often attributed to Kennedy, regardless of the actual contributions of other creatives involved. While The Mandalorian was praised for its storytelling and production quality, Kennedy did not receive much credit, even though fans often claimed she was the mastermind behind it. Similarly, the final film in the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, received poor reviews, which some fans blamed on Kennedy.

A New Leadership Approach

Dave Filoni, known for his work on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, has been a natural choice for the new creative leadership role at Lucasfilm. His contributions to The Mandalorian and Star Wars: Ahsoka have demonstrated his storytelling abilities. However, some fans are concerned that this change may lead to a lack of innovation, with future projects potentially being too similar to the past.

The impact of this regime change remains to be seen, but it marks a significant shift in the direction of the Star Wars franchise. As the galaxy continues to expand, the legacy of Kennedy and the vision of Filoni will shape the future of this beloved saga.
